
Rowan breaks record in Jackals' win

Little Falls, NJ- The Jackals used a five run bottom of the eighth to stun the Quebec Les Capitales by a final score of 8-5.
Quebec finally broke through against the Jackals ¬â¢ Brad Whitworth in the top of the fifth. With Olivier Lepine on third, Goefry Tomlinson delivered a two-out, RBI single, putting Les Capitales on top.
Again, one inning was enough to put the Jackals on top. In the bottom of the sixth, a two RBI double by Wilton Veras, and an RBI single by Wady Almonte, gave the Jackals a 3-1 lead.
But in the top of the eighth, Quebec would use bloop base hits to even the ballgame at three. Lee Delfino hit a seeing eye single scoring Ricky Morton. On a wild pitch, Steve Booker scored.
New Jersey would again unleash a barrage of runs in the bottom of the eighth, which would be the difference in the ballgame. With the bases loaded, Chris Rowan smashed his third grand slam of the 2004 season, a league record, giving the Jackals a 7-3 lead. John Anderson added an RBI single with two outs.
Shane Hopper notched an RBI single in the top of the ninth. Juan Melo also added an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Brad Whitworth received a no decision in seven strong innings. Whitworth gave up one run; it was not earned, on seven hits, while striking out three. Craig Breslow got the win in relief. Fabricio Benitez picked up his 12th save of the season.
Lance Franks, of Quebec, gave up three earned runs on seven hits, while also receiving a no decision. Mike Hoyt did not record an out in relief, and gave up five earned runs, in a losing effort.
For New Jersey, Zack Smithlin and John Anderson both tallied three hits.
Goef Tomlinson, of Quebec, went 3-5 with an RBI.
The Jackals and Les Capitales play game two of their four game set on Friday, August 13, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. New Jersey Jackals' shortstop Chris Rowan eclipsed the team record for homeruns as a member of the ballclub, on Friday, August 7, 2004. Rowan hit his 29th as a member of the Jackals, and 17th of the 2004 season, eclipsing Travis Bailey's record of 28.
On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. OBLITERATE Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.
The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings
The New Jersey Jackals will be holding its 2nd annual NJ PETS Dog Days of Summer on Sunday, August 15, 2004, at Yogi Berra Stadium. It is an opportunity to bring your dog to the ballpark, participate in free giveaways, get portraits, and receive interesting literature on dog grooming provided by NJ PETS, Best Friend's Photography, and Mike's Feed Farm. The ballgame is scheduled to begin at 5:05 p.m., but those who arrive by 4:00 p.m. will have the opportunity to take their dog onto the field and participate in a pet tricks contest.
The Jackals will also be holding a blood drive at Yogi Berra Stadium, on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. A Bloodmobile will be located at the ballpark.
