August 12, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
West Haven, CT- The New Haven County Cutters squandered an early lead and lost to the Brockton Rox 8-5, despite a late inning rally, at historic Yale Field.
The Cutters jumped out of the gate early with a one-out triple by PJ Johnston over the head of Brockton right fielder Mike Sandoval in the first inning. The relay throw by Saul Bustos to third base sailed into the stands allowing Johnston to score on the error.
After Brockton tied it at one in the second, bunt singles by Tommy Joyce and Chad Stewart set the stage for a three run homer by Saul Bustos in the third. In all, the Rox scored four runs on five hits to take a 5-1 lead.
After the Rox took a 7-1 lead on two unearned runs in the top of the seventh off of reliever Laine McKeller, New Haven responded with a four run inning to cut the lead to 7-5. Kevin Forbes hit a two-run homer in the frame and Jeff Brooks and Billy Rich added a pair of RBI doubles down the left field line.
The Cutters allowed one run in the eighth on a two-out RBI double by Chad Stewart that gave Brockton an 8-5 lead. The Brockton bullpen worked a perfect eighth and Tony Stutz recorded his third save by retiring three of the four batters he faced in the ninth inning.
Adam Shorsher scorched a line drive off the back of Brockton starter Brian Buchanan that ended his night in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shorsher went 2-for-3 on the night with a run scored.
The 1-4 hitters for the Rox combined to go 9-for-19 with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored.
Tim Keinath (3-5) got the loss. Brian Buchanan (10-3) recorded his tenth victory of the season.
The Cutters are headed to Massachusetts for a seven-game road trip, with four against the North Shore Spirit and wrapping up with three against Brockton. All games are available on the internet through cuttersbaseball.com and all weekend games will be on New Haven's flagship station AM 1150 WMRD.
