ROUND ROCK, Texas - Dayton Buller homered twice, and Wily Peralta worked five and two-thirds scoreless innings as the Nashville Sounds blanked the Round Rock Express 4-0 in Wednesday night's Pacific Coast League opener at The Dell Diamond. The Express (36-44) suffered their third shutout, all of which were at home. The Sounds (31-48) snapped an 11-game losing streak at The Dell Diamond, dating back to the 2010 season.
Buller clubbed Derek Holland's 2-0 offering over the Express bullpen with one out in the third. It was his first round-tripper of the season in his 17th game with Nashville. His second homer was controversial, a towering shot down the left-field line with one out in the seventh off Joe Ortiz that initially was called foul by third-base umpire Cory Blaser. After the umpires met behind the mound, Blaser's call was overruled by second-base umpire Clint Fagan, giving Buller a second solo homer.
Sean Halton also hit a one-out solo homer in the fourth. Jordan Brown followed with a single and later scored on a two-out Luis Hernandez fielding error, only his fifth of the year and first in 12 games.
Holland (0-1) allowed one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout in a predetermined three-inning rehab start. He used 39 pitches with 24 strikes and logged a first-pitch strike on eight of 12 batters faced.
Peralta (3-8) picked up the win but left the game with two outs in the sixth with an apparent injury. He scattered four hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Rob Wooten retired all four batters he faced with one strikeout, and Mike McClendon had a strikeout in a perfect eighth inning. Jim Henderson worked around a two-out Brad Nelson single for a scoreless ninth; he had two strikeouts.
Buller and Jeff Bianchi (2-for-4) had the game's only multiple-hit outings.
Five Round Rock batters each had a single as the Express were held without an extra-base hit for the first time this season. Julio Borbon singled in the first inning, snapping an 0-for-29 skid; it was his first hit since a third-inning single June 17 vs. Oklahoma City. Matt Kata's fourth-inning single was the 367th of his Express career, one shy of Brooks Conrad for second in franchise history.
Round Rock and Nashville continue their three-game series Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Derek Hankins (2-4, 4.20 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while right-hander Mark Rogers (3-4, 5.65 ERA) is slated to start for the Sounds.
