Des Moines, Iowa - Mike Hessman hit two of the Oklahoma City RedHawks (45-34) four home runs as they opened their series with a 10-6 win over the Iowa Cubs (33-47) Wednesday night before 6,417 at Principal Park.
Hessman hit a solo homer in the third and added a two-run shot in the sixth. He is now tied for the PCL lead with 23 home runs, and it was his sixth multi-homer game of year. In the last four games between the RedHawks and Cubs, Hessman has hit seven homers.
Hessman's two homers were part of a four-homer night by the RedHawks. Landon Powell and Brett Wallace each hit solo shots as well. Wallace finished 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles in addition to the round-tripper.
The RedHawks led 4-0 through their first three times to the plate, but the Cubs rallied for four in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
Wallace's homer off the roof of the restaurant in left field in the fourth gave the lead back to the RedHawks, but again, the Cubs responded in the bottom of the inning to tie game.
Brad Snyder and Brandon Barnes started the fifth with back-to-back doubles to put the RedHawks in front for good. Later in the inning, Barnes stole home as part of a double steal, and Jimmy Paredes collected an RBI single.
Hessman's second blast in the sixth finished the scoring. The RedHawks tallied 15 hits, nine of which went for extra bases. Six RedHawks finished the game with at least two hits.
The Cubs threatened one more time in the eighth, scoring once and loading the bases with one out. Hector Ambriz retired the next two hitters to end the threat.
After starting pitcher Brett Oberholtzer lasted just 3.2 innings, the RedHawks bullpen allowed one run over the final 5.1 frames. Enerio Del Rosario (3-1) earned the win, retiring all seven hitters he faced.
Cubs starting pitcher Chris Rusin (6-6) lost for the second straight time at home. Rusin allowed a season-high eight runs over four-plus innings and gave up three home runs.
The RedHawks and Cubs continue their series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday night in Des Moines. Live coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on AM 1340, 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
