RoughRiders' Wehrs Named USHL Defensive Player of the Week

Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defenseman Kevin Wehrs has been named United States Hockey League Defensive Player of the Week.

Wehrs, 18, collected four assists and and posted a plus/minus rating of +1 in three games last week. Wehrs rang up three assists- including a helper on the game winning goal- in the Riders' 7-4 victory over Waterloo last Friday night. Wehrs added another assist one night later in a 5-3 loss at Waterloo.

"Kevin has done fine a fine job for us at both ends of the ice and has been a very consistent presence," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson.

This marks the second time this season Wehrs has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. He also took home the award in January.

Wehrs is tied for fourth among USHL defensemen in points (40) and ranks fifth among blue liners in assists (32). At +14, the Minnesota recruit ranks second on the Riders in plus/minus.

Wehrs has nearly doubled his offensive totals for all of last season. The, Plymouth, Minnesota, native scored five goals and notched 22 points in 2005-06.

Wehrs is the only holdover from the RoughRiders' 2004-05 Clark Cup-winning team. He played four regular season games and two playoff games after joining the team in March of that season. He was selected by the RoughRiders in the third round of August, 2004 USHL Futures Draft with the thirtieth overall choice.

The RoughRiders (34-17-4, 72 points) are in first place in the USHL's East Division heading into tomorrow night's game against the Chicago Steel in Bensenville, Illinois. The Riders will visit the Green Bay Gamblers Friday evening before returning home to meet the Indiana Ice Saturday night at 7:05.

Tickets for Saturday's game and the Riders' April 14 regular season home finale are now on sale. Tickets are available for purchase in person at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office, over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or on line at www.roughridershockey.com. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Ticket prices range from $7 to $17 in advance and from $8 to $18 on game days.
