Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defenseman Kevin Wehrs has been named to the United States Under-18 Select Team that will play in the Under-18 Junior World Cup August 9-14 in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic.

"This is a tremendous honor and a great opportunity for Kevin," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. "The chance to pull on that U.S.A. jersey is something pretty special. I couldn't be happier that Kevin is going to have that chance."

Wehrs, 17, played four regular season games for the RoughRiders last season after joining the team in March from Wayzata (Minnesota) High School. Wehrs also skated in two playoff games during the Riders' drive to the United States Hockey League Clark Cup title. He was the youngest player on the Cedar Rapids roster last season.

Wehrs will be back in Cedar Rapids in September for his first full USHL season. The Plymouth, Minnesota, native is one of nine players from last season's title winning squad who will return to the Riders for the coming campaign.

Wehrs is one of eleven USHL players on the U.S. roster. He is the fourth RoughRider to make the team in the last two years. Riders Hunter Bishop, Alec Martinez and Gary Steffes represented the U.S. at last year's Under-18 World Cup.

The RoughRiders will open the 2005-06 season on September 24 when they meet the Tri-City Storm in Kearney, Nebraska. The Riders will open on home ice on Saturday, October 8 when they play host to the Green Bay Gamblers at 7:05PM.

2005-06 RoughRiders season tickets are currently available through the Riders' business office (247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 31 will receive a discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders.

The RoughRiders last season won the first Clark Cup (playoff) title in team history and also claimed a share of the Anderson Cup (regular season) title for the first time ever. The Riders went 42-13-5 last season, the best record in team history.
