Kearney, Ne. - Carson Meyer scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season, but the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders fought back to edge the Storm in a shootout, 2-1, Friday at the Viaero Event Center.
Luke Morgan scored the only regulation goal for the RoughRiders halfway through the third, tying the game. The equalizer set up Cal Burke's game-winning shootout goal in the top of the third round..
The goals spoiled a strong outing from Matt Greenfield, who stopped 28 of 29 shots during regulation and overtime plus two of three shootout opportunities.
Ryan Larkin, minding net for the RoughRiders, turned aside 34 shots and went a perfect three-for-three in the shootout.
Tri-City remains without a regulation loss this season at 3-0-1, while Cedar Rapids has won its first five games.
In the three-round shootout, Larkin stopped Wahlin, Limoges and Labosky in order.
The game between two unbeaten teams began with high intensity in a defensively-played first. The Storm and RoughRiders each managed seven shots on goal through the opening 20 minutes.
The pace picked up in the second and Tri-City's Carson Meyer scored the game's first goal, deflecting a wide left shot by Jason Krych to the back of the net at the 11:52 mark. Alex Limoges started the play with a face-off win and Jack McNeely sent the puck to the left point for Krych's shot.
McNeely, with his parents Amy and Mike in attendance at the Viaero Event Center, earned his first point of the season. Krych received the primary assist.
The Storm pounded the RoughRiders in the second, outshooting Cedar Rapids, 18-5.
Morgan tallied the RoughRiders' only regulation goal, ripping a shot from the left point over Greenfield with 9:16 remaining. Ben Foley and Pavel Tkachkov garnered assists.
The teams remained scoreless through the final half of the third and seven minutes of overtime. Tri-City finished 0-for-3 on the power play. Cedar Rapids was 0-for-4 on the man advantage.
