Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, NE - In front of a capacity crowd of 3,530 at Ralston Arena on Friday night, the Omaha Lancers completed a thrilling comeback victory, 3-2, over the Des Moines Buccaneers courtesy of Josh French in overtime while goaltender Kris Oldham stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced.
A deflection in the opening period gave Des Moines their first lead of the season against the Omaha Lancers. As a shot was coming from just inside the right point position, Patrick Grasso skated to the hash marks and angled his stick to lift the puck over goaltender Kris Oldham for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Buccaneers' lead. Kyle Siemers and Vince Marinaro had assists.
Later in the first period Omaha tied the game up courtesy of the captain, Nick Rivera. Mitch Perrault took the puck in the neutral zone and skated into the offensive zone creating a three-on-one opportunity. Perrault sent to puck to his left and Rivera sent it by Nick MacNab for his first of the season at 12:52 with assists from Perrault and Nick Jenny.
Second period bad bounce off a skate from behind the net gave the Buccaneers a 2-1 lead. Jake Gingell tried to clear the puck from below the goal line to the right of the net. The puck went off a skate in front and by the left leg pad of goaltender Kris Oldham at 14:41 of the second period. Assists on Howell's goal were credited to Laine McKay and Nikita Pavlychev.
Trailing by a goal in the third period, Omaha took advantage of a power play chance late in regulation. While Des Moines' Zach Jordan sat in the penalty box, Brannon McManus let a shot go from the left wing circle that Mitch Perrault deflected into the net to even the score 2-2 with just 2:55 left in the game. The goal was Perrault's first of the year and McManus tallied his second overall assist. Grant Gabriele sent the pass to McManus and had the second helper.
After no scoring after that, the two teams went to overtime. Four minutes of four-on-four hockey went undecided and it switched to three-on-three. With just 24 seconds remaining in overtime, Jacob Bryson sent a pass to Josh French who one-timed the puck by a sprawling Nick MacNab for the game-winner on his first of the season.
With the win, Omaha moved to 3-2-0 on the young season and Kris Oldham recorded his second win backed by a 31-save performance.
The Omaha Lancers hit the road tomorrow to face the defending Clark Cup Champion Sioux Falls Stampede inside the Denny Sanford Premier Center. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. and fans can listen live beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Valpak Pregame Show on "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL, Mighty 1290 KOIL Mobile APP, www.mighty1290koil.com, and FASTHockey.com.
