LINCOLN, Neb. - A seven-point night from the Lincoln Stars' top forward line drove a 5-2 victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday night at the Ice Box.
The Stars capitalized on a fruitful second period that saw them take a two-goal lead. Goals by Ethen Frank, Ludvig Hoff and Grant Jozefek, on ten shots, proved costly for the Fighting Saints. The Saints outshot the Stars 38-29 for the game, and 16-10 in the second period alone.
Frank one-timed a cross-ice feed from Will D'Orsi to give the Stars a 2-1 lead. Hoff, the reigning USHL Forward of the Week, kept his hot streak going by cutting to the middle of the ice on a 2-on-1 break and scoring. Jozefek pounced on a turnover to score.
Trey Dodd finished a tremendous night with two goals. One of them, a power play goal on a Mitchell Smith shot on the power play, had tied the game before the Stars exploded for two unanswered goals.
Dodd's first goal opened the scoring just under four minutes into the contest. Evan Smith jumped on a turnover, and fed Dodd in the slot. His shot snuck through the five hole of Peyton Jones, who, aside from that early tally, was exceptional in his second game of action this season.
Jones, who had earned second-star honors, stopped 36 shots on the night. His prior start was a shutout of the Omaha Lancers a week prior. In that game, he stopped 22 shots. His marvelous stop on a three-way passing play between Petter Mî=A4kitalo, Nathan Sucese, and Willie Knierim set the tone for the rest of the game.
Adam Brady capped the scoring for the Stars on the power play, whipping a spinning backhander past starter Jaxon Castor, who received his second consecutive start, both on the road.
The Fighting Saints return home Saturday to finish the back-to-back with the Lincoln Stars at the Mystique Community Ice Center beginning at 7:05 p.m. Join the Fighting Saints for Cinderella's Ball. A limited amount of VIP passes are available to take part in a meet-and-greet with Cinderella before the game, and a Princess Parade during the second intermission.
