Calgary, AB - Calgary Roughnecks General Manager Kurt Silcott today went back to his former club to find a new back up goalie for Curtis Palidwor.

Ryan Avery, his latest recruit, has been playing behind Steve ‘Chugger' Dietrich in Buffalo this year.

In return for Avery, the Buffalo Bandits get a first round pick in the 2006 National Lacrosse League entry draft.

"In my opinion," said Silcott, "Ryan has the potential to be a great goaltender in this league.

"I've had my eye on him for a long time. He was on Buffalo's practice roster last year and during this past summer he made tremendous strides playing for the Mohawk Stars in the OLA.

Silcott continued, "Ryan has a good size and is a talented athlete. He has all the tools a young goalie needs and I expect him to develop further under Curtis Palidwor."

Avery, 23, was drafted in the 2nd round in 2002 by the Rochester Knighthawks, where he played behind Pat O'Toole. He later moved to Buffalo and a spot on the depth chart behind Dietrich.

"I was certainly surprised by the news," said Avery, speaking from his Hamilton, Ontario, home. "But it's exciting news and I can't wait to get out West and meet with the rest of the team."

He already knows tough defender Ryan McNish and assistant coach Jeff Dowling from his days playing Jr. A in Burlington, Ontario.

Avery, a student, is 6ft. 1 in. and weighs 200 lbs. He started lacrosse when he was four-years-old.

The deal is subject to National Lacrosse League approval.
