Roughnecks Qualify for NLL Playoffs
April 12, 2003 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Calgary Roughnecks News Release
On the heels of a 16-14 win over the Buffalo Bandits in front of 13,869 Friday night at the Pengrowth Saddledome the Calgary Roughnecks have qualified for the club's first ever playoff appearance.
Thanks to the Albany Attack defeating the Vancouver Ravens 12-8 Saturday night, the Roughnecks have secured the fifth seed in the National Lacrosse League playoffs.
The Roughnecks will face the Buffalo Bandits on either this coming Friday or Saturday (depending on venue availability) in Buffalo in the NLL quarter finals.
The Roughnecks split the season series with Buffalo, including a dramatic 16-14 win Saturday night at the âDome.
"On Friday night we took it to them, everyone talks about what a physical team they are and how they intimidate their opposition with their tough style of play," said Roughnecks head coach Chris Hall.
"We showed the league that if we stick our game plan and play Calgary Roughnecks lacrosse, we can play with anyone in this league.
The Roughnecks finished the season with a 9-7 record, a dramatic increase from the 4-12 finish following the club's inaugural season. The win column was not the only place the âRiggers saw a big difference, as attendance was up 47 per cent in the club's sophomore campaign.
"What a great way to finish the regular season. On behalf of the Roughnecks organization I would like to thank our fans for embracing this team," said Roughnecks general manager, Brad Banister.
"And I hope we can bring Calgary a much deserved championship.
