Synopsis: The Ottawa Rebel completed its 2003 National Lacrosse League season on a down note at the Civic Centre on Saturday, losing a 17-11 decision to the Columbus Landsharks in front of 5,289 fans.
Despite a second-quarter rally that erased a 5-1 deficit, the Rebel could not match the Columbus scoring in the second half and suffered its eighth straight loss.
Pat Maddalena led the Columbus attack with five goals and two assists. Kyle Arbuckle had four goals and three assists.
Kevin Howard scored five times for Ottawa and added one assist. Mat Giles and Jason Clark added a pair each for the Rebel while rookies Brad Self and Kevin Dostie added singles.
The Rebel outshot the Landsharks 57-35. Columbus goalie Mike Miron made 46 saves. Ottawa goalie Matt Disher made 18 saves on 35 shots.
The loss prevented the Rebel from setting a franchise record for most wins in a season. The four wins equals the best record, set by last year's Ottawa squad, in Rebel and Syracuse Smash history.
