The Calgary Roughnecks today selected defenseman Kyle Laverty with the seventh selection of the Ottawa Rebel dispersal draft.

The National Lacrosse League announced yesterday that the Ottawa franchise had suspended operations and would not participate in the 2003-04 NLL season. Ottawa players were made available to the remaining 11 NLL clubs through a dispersal draft held today in which the Roughnecks held the seventh overall selection based on teams records from last season.

Laverty, a native of Roughnecks captain Tracey Kelusky's hometown of Peterborough, ON, led Ottawa in penalties (18) and in penalty minutes (48) in 15 games last season with the Rebel. A solid defenseman, he is expected have an immediate impact with the Roughnecks.

"In Kyle we picked up a very solid core defenseman that we expect will quickly become the leader of our defense. He is an established player in this league and goes a long way in our goal to strengthen our back-end for the coming season," said Roughnecks General Manager, Brad Banister.

The Roughnecks also picked up a left-handed skilled forward with their second pick in Kevin Dostie. Dostie was fourth on the Ottawa club with 34 points (21goals, 13 assists).

"Dostie showed last year in his rookie season that he can play in this league, he can put the ball in the net and scoop up loose balls (81), we are looking forward to what he brings to the club," added Banister.

Tickets for the Roughnecks 2003-04 season are now on sale through the Roughnecks ticket office or by calling (403) 294-9244.
