Colorado Mammoth News Release
Denver, Colo. - The Colorado Mammoth today acquired forwards Brad Self and Mike Henderson in a dispersal draft triggered by the sudden suspension of operations by the National Lacrosse League's Ottawa Rebel franchise.
Colorado, choosing eighth overall, selected Self as its first-round pick. Self is a 5'11", 185-pound, left-shooting forward from Peterborough, Ontario. He registered 26 points (12g, 14a) and collected 41 loose balls for the Rebel last season.
"Brad is a future star with this franchise and we're very excited to have him," said Colorado Mammoth General Manager Steve Govett.
Henderson, from Brampton, Ontario, played three games after being signed late last season as a rookie free agent by the Rebel - and nearly led the Rebel in penalty minutes for the season. Henderson is 6'2", 225 pounds and shoots left.
"Mike is potentially one of the toughest players in the League and he will be called on to protect our superstars," said Govett.
"Both of these guys could be tremendous assets," said Mammoth Head Coach Jamie Batley. "Brad is fast and a terrific, young athlete, while Mike is one of the three toughest players in the League."
Colorado passed on its third round draft selection.
The first pick in the draft went to the newly-relocated Anaheim franchise which selected goalie Matt Disher.
Plagued by low attendance, the Ottawa Rebel announced yesterday it would suspend operations. The club will not participate in the 2003-04 season scheduled to begin in December.
"We look forward to having this franchise revived in a new market for the 2004-05 season," said National Lacrosse League Commissioner Jim Jennings. "We continue to place underperforming franchises in emerging NHL and NBA markets, where they can be aligned with strategic partners that will ensure their success."
In the past two months, the NLL has relocated teams from Albany to San Jose and from New Jersey to Anaheim. Both franchises have been sold to ownership groups with stakes in the NHL's San Jose Sharks and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, respectively. They follow a similar move last season by the Washington Power - which became the Colorado Mammoth to Colorado Avalanche owner Kroenke Sports Enterprises.
