CALGARY - The Calgary Roughnecks suffered a 19-14 setback to the Washington Stealth on Saturday night in front of 9,362 fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Luke Wiles had five goals and four assists to lead the Stealth attack as Washington avenged a 13-11 loss to the Riggers at home in Everett, Wash., on Jan. 9. Scott Ranger scored four times and set up two others in a losing cause for the Roughnecks (2-2), while Kaleb Toth had a hat trick and two helpers. Toth's second goal of the game was the 300th of his National Lacrosse League career. Jeff Shattler (3g, 1a), Dane Dobbie (1g, 5a), Cory Conway (1g, 3a), Curtis Dickson (3a), Daryl Veltman (2a) and Peter McFetridge (2a) also had multiple-point performances for Calgary, while Mark Scherman and Geoff Snider each scored once. Rhys Duch had a strong game for Washington (2-2) with four goals and four assists, while former Roughnecks Craig Conn (4g, 1a) and Lewis Ratcliff (2g, 4a) also played well for the Stealth. Mike Grimes (1g, 1a), Jason Bloom (1g) and Paul Rabil (4a) also chipped in for the win. Washington goalie Tyler Richards stopped 39 of 53 shots he faced, while Calgary netminder Mike Poulin made 43 saves in a losing cause. The game featured a rough start with a pair of simultaneous fights just 26 seconds into the contest. The undercard bout featured Snider taking on Matt Beers, while the main event between Calgary's Mike Kilby and Washington's Chris O'Dougherty lasted considerably longer. Conn and Wiles then scored to give the Stealth a 2-0 advantage before Ranger replied for the Riggers. After Grimes counted a shorthanded goal for Washington, Toth converted a feed from Conway to pull the 'Necks within a goal once again. Ratcliff put Washington up 4-2 before Dobbie and Shattler responded with a pair of goals for Calgary to tie things up. Conn then notched his second of the contest followed by a power-play goal by Duch to give the Stealth a 6-4 lead after one quarter. Just 16 seconds into the second quarter, Scherman took a feed from Dobbie and fired a shot past Richards for his first-ever goal as a Roughneck. Only 67 after that, Ratcliff counted his second of the game to put the visitors up 7-5. The Riggers had a strong start to the second half as Ranger notched a shorthanded goal just 37 seconds into the third quarter. The Stealth replied right away with goals by Wiles and Ratcliff before Shattler redirected a pass from Ranger past Richards for a power-play goal at 7:11 of the third. Bloom and Duch then scored to extend Washington's lead to 11-7 before Ranger fired his hat-trick goal during a Calgary man advantage. Snider then scored at 13:44 of the third quarter to pull the Roughnecks within a pair of goals, but that was as close as they would get. Led by six more points by Wiles, the Stealth outscored the Roughnecks 8-5 in the final frame en route to the convincing victory. The Roughnecks will look to get back to their winning ways next weekend with a home-and-home series against the Edmonton Rush. The Riggers will travel north to face the Rush in Edmonton on Friday night (7 p.m.) before returning home to the 'Dome for a rematch on Saturday (7:30 p.m.).
