Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth fell 11-10 at home to the Philadelphia Wings in front of 16,034 fans on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center Saturday night. Key contributors for the Mammoth included forward Brian Langtry, who scored a hat trick in the game, and forward John Grant Jr., who tallied 8 points on 2 goals and 6 assists. Despite these efforts, Mammoth penalties and Philadelphia's transition offense proved to be too much for Colorado to overcome.
The Mammoth got on the board early with an underhand goal by Langtry just 24 seconds into the first quarter. Colorado piled on two more goals just 32 seconds apart - the first coming from forward Jason Wasson on an assist from Grant, the second from Langtry who collected a rebound, beat one defender, then buried it in the back of the net. Grant racked up his third assist of the quarter with a pass to forward Mike McLellan on a power-play goal to put the Mammoth up 4-0. Philadelphia finally found the net with 1:21 remaining in the quarter to bring the score to 4-1.
The Wings started the second-quarter scoring with a goal from transition player Max Seibald 1:18 in. The Mammoth answered as forward Alex Gajic scored a short-handed goal, beating his man on a face dodge, freeing his hands for the shot. Philadelphia matched with a power-play goal from forward Brendan Mundorf just 38 seconds later, bringing the Wings to within 2. The Mammoth pushed the score to 7-3 before the half as Langtry completed the first-half hat trick at the 5:55 mark while forward Jamie Shewchuk added the final goal of the half on a power-play goal at the 13:09 mark.
The Mammoth's second half woes continued from last week in Calgary as Colorado allowed the Wings to score three goals while adding none of its own, bringing the score to 7-6 going into the final frame.
The fourth quarter started much like the third with Philadelphia scoring first. A goal by Wings transition player Kyle Sweeney just 8 seconds into the quarter was followed, just 30 seconds later, by a goal from Seibald. The Mammoth managed to stop the bleeding with back-to-back goals from Grant, both coming off outside shots by the forward at the 1:01 and 1:41 marks. The Wings tied the game at nine as defenseman Paul Dawson scored a fast-break goal just under five minutes into the quarter. The Wings took their second lead of the game on a power-play goal at the 7:55 mark. Mammoth transition player Ilija Gajic tied the game at 10 with a laser shot with 2:32 remaining, only to see the lead slip away on another transition goal by Dawson with 1:30 left in the game. Unable to score in the final moments, the Mammoth was handed its second loss of the season, bringing its mark to 1-2 on the year. Dating back to last season, 12 of the Mammoth's last 18 games have been decided by just one goal.
Colorado will not have to wait long for another chance against the Wings, traveling to Philadelphia next Saturday, January 29. The game will be shown on tape-delay on Sunday, January 30 at 11pm MST on Altitude Sports and Entertainment. The next home game for the Mammoth is Saturday, February 5 at 7pm when its hosts the Washington Stealth.
