Calgary Roughnecks News Release
CALGARY, AB - The Calgary Roughnecks clinched a first round home playoff game with an 11-10 win over the Colorado Mammoth in both teams regular season finale. The win improves the Roughnecks record to 10-6 while the Mammoth's record drops to 4-12.
The Roughnecks will host the Edmonton Rush (10-6) next weekend in the Western Division semifinals as the second seed in the division. The Mammoth, who were already eliminated from playoff contention, dropped to 0-8 on the season at home.
The Roughnecks opened the scoring when Dane Dobbie beat the Mammoth defense, and quickly converted a Josh Sanderson feed at 4:21 of the opening quarter. A low scoring first frame featured only one more goal with Jamie Floris tying the game for the Mammoth.
Scoring increased in the second quarter, kicked off by a power play goal from the Mammoth's Jed Prossner just over a minute in.
Iliya Gajic would give the Mammoth their biggest lead of the half on a full floor feed in transition at 6:04.
The Riggers would strike back quickly and tie the game on the strength of two goals from Scott Ranger in just over a minute. Jeff Moleski would score in all alone on transition to regain the lead for Calgary. Twelve seconds after the Moleski goal, Floris would pot his second of the night to tie it back up. The teams would trade goals once more before a goal from Dobbie would give Calgary a 6-5 lead heading into halftime.
The Mammoth didn't take long to tie it up in the third quarter when a rocket on the power play from Prossner beat Riggers goalie Mike Poulin on the wide side at the 1:30 mark.
Two straight goals for Calgary, by Tracey Kelusky on the power play and Dobbie's hat trick goal, gave them their biggest lead of the game. The Mammoth would pull back within one on a Jamie Shewchuck goal. The score after three quarters was 8-7.
The Riggers would also come away without a goal on an early five minute power play in the fourth quarter. However, Sanderson would score two goals in under two minutes, with a Mammoth goal from Cliff Smith wedged in the middle.
The Mammoth scored two goals, by Shewchuck and Prossner, with the goalie pulled to tie the game up with 47 seconds remaining on the clock.
With 15 seconds left, Ranger would pot the game winner off of a Dobbie rebound.
Sanderson (3g, 4a) increased his cushion to 15 at the top of the league point's race over Lewis Ratcliff of the Washington Stealth and Callum Crawford of the Minnesota Swarm.
The Calgary Roughnecks will return to the Pengrowth Saddledome next Saturday for the Western Division Semi-Final against provincial rivals, the Edmonton Rush. Game time is 1 p.m. MT.
