Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth lost its final game of the season, 11-10, at home to the Calgary Roughnecks in front of 15,727 fans Friday night at Pepsi Center. With the win, the Roughnecks clinched a first round home playoff game. The win improves the Roughnecks record to 10-6 while the Mammoth ends its frustrating season at 4-12.
Despite another strong outing from Mammoth goalie Chris Levis (47 saves), the Roughnecks' offensive unit proved to be too much to handle for Colorado, scoring a late-game goal to hand the Mammoth the heart-breaking loss. Both squads started the first quarter with solid defensive efforts, allowing only one goal each. Calgary got on the board first with a goal from forward Dane Dobbie at the 4:21 mark. The Mammoth matched with a goal from forward Jamie Floris who took a shovel pass from Alex Gajic, then buried the shot at the 7:36 mark. Mammoth goalie Chris Levis helped Colorado kill two penalties in the quarter making 14 saves including several from point-blank range.
Colorado started the second quarter by scoring a power play off a late, first quarter penalty on Calgary. Jed Prossner caught a pass up top from Brian Langtry then sent a laser past Calgary goalie Mike Poulin 1:02 into the quarter. The Mammoth followed with another goal as defenseman Steve Forsythe collected a loose ball then found a streaking Ilija Gajic on a half-field pass who then bounced the ball in at the 6:04 mark. The Roughnecks then went on a three-goal run before the Mammoth could muster a goal. Floris scored his second of the night on a fast break as Ilija Gajic carried the ball down the field then threw a pass over his shoulder to Floris who was open behind him for a goal at the 8:55 mark. Colorado went on to score one more in the half, sandwiched by two Calgary goals to bring the first half score to 6-5, Calgary.
The Mammoth opened the third quarter with another early power play goal. This one coming from Prossner on a behind-the-back pass from Langtry just 1:30 into the half. Calgary matched with two of its own goals, the second coming on an acrobatic wrap-around shot off a back-door cut from forward Dobbie, completing a hat trick at the 8:21 mark. The goal extended the Roughnecks' lead to two. The Mammoth cut the lead to one before the end of the quarter with a rip from forward Jamie Shewchuk at the top left at the 12:13 mark.
The fourth quarter played out much like the first with neither team scoring for more than half of the quarter until Calgary forward Josh Sanderson wrapped a shot around his defender, screening Levis for a goal at the 8:07 mark. Colorado answered with a bounce shot from just inside the restraining line by Smith just 17 seconds later. The Roughnecks regained a two-goal lead, however, with another goal from Sanderson, a hat trick for him as well, at the 9:52 mark. The Mammoth rallied with a fast break, dive-shot goal from Shewchuk and a deep, extra attacker bounce shot from Prossner to tie the score at 10 with just 43 seconds remaining. But Calgary managed to clean up a rebound, stuffing home the game-winning goal with just 16 seconds left. A final shot for the Mammoth ringed off the pipe, handing Colorado its eighth straight home loss of the season.
The loss marks the sixth one-goal loss for the Mammoth this season. Colorado also won three one-goal games in 2010. For the first time in its eight-year team history, Colorado will be watching the playoffs instead of participating.
