Roughnecks 2011 Preseason Acquisition Adrian Awasom Signs with Minnesota Vikings

MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks have announced on Wednesday, January 12 that defensive linemen Adrian Awasom, who signed with the Roughnecks for the 2011 season, has signed with the Minnesota Vikings after spending two seasons with the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League.

In his second season with the Locomotives in 2010, Awasom finished seventh on the Locomotives roster with 24 total tackles (15 solo). Awasom led the Locomotives and finished third in the UFL with five sacks, and was also credited with three pass breakups during the regular season.

In his first season with Las Vegas in 2009, Awasom registered 10 total tackles with one sack and one pass defended during the regular season. Awasom would help the Locomotives win back-to-back UFL Championships in 2009 & 2010 with both victories coming against the Florida Tuskers. Awasom posted four total tackles and one sack in the 2009 UFL Championship game, and recorded 2.5 total tackles with a 0.5 tackle for loss in the 2010 UFL Championship game.

"We were hoping to get a couple of games out of Adrian this year but we knew the possibility was there that he would get signed early. This confirms to us that we are recruiting the right types of players for 2011. We are definitely happy for him and wish him well." stated West Texas Roughnecks Head Coach Chris Williams.

Awasom (6'5, 280 lbs.) originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 2005 where he would spend three seasons (2005-2007). Awasom played in a total of 17 NFL games and recorded 14 total tackles with one sack. His most productive season with the Giants came in 2006 when he played in 10 games and recorded 12 tackles with one sack.

Prior to his NFL career, Awasom held an outstanding collegiate career at the University of North Texas where he finished with 147 total tackles, including 32 tackles for loss and 22 sacks. As a senior in 2004, Awasom recorded 52 total tackles, including 13 tackles for loss and six sacks. He posted 44 total tackles including four sacks in 12 games played as a junior in 2003, and recorded a career-best eight sacks as a sophomore in 2002. Awasom was named a three-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection.
