Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Another shaky performance by a Winnipeg Goldeyes starter gave the Sioux City Explorers all they needed at Shaw Park on Monday night.
The Goldeyes' Dustin Loggins didn't make it out of the fourth inning as the Explorers put up seven runs on six hits in the fourth and went on to defeat the Goldeyes 11-3 in the first game of a four-game series in Winnipeg.
Officially, Loggins gave up six runs on six hits while his reliever in the fourth, Raul Rivera, was responsible for five runs on seven hits as the Fish lost their second straight game and fell to 15-20 on the season.
The Goldeyes were in this one for a while. After Sioux City jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second and then added a run in the third on a solo homer by Noah Perio Jr., the Goldeyes scored two in the bottom of the third and made a game of it.
With two out, Brady Wilson drew a walk and then Adam Heisler tripled to drive Wilson home. The next hitter, first baseman Casey Haerther, beat out an infield single to score Heisler and that made it 3-2.
But then the Xs battered Loggins and Rivera for seven in the fourth.
The Goldeyes added a third run in the fifth when Kyle Brandenburg doubled and scored on a single by Casey Haerther, but that was it. Sioux City finished with 11 runs on 15 hits, while the Goldeyes had three runs on seven hits.
On the upside, relievers Tony Smith, Rett Varner, Brendan Lafferty and Jailen Peguero shut out the Explorers on only two hits over the final four innings, but the damage had already been done.
Haerther finished the game with two hits and two RBI. Right fielder Brady Wilson went two-for-three with a run scored.
Sioux City starter John Straka (5-1, 2.96 ERA) got the win, while Goldeyes starter Loggins (2-4, 4.99 ERA) was tagged with the loss.
The Goldeyes and Explorers will play Game 2 of this four-game set on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Shaw Park. Right-hander Coby Cowgill (2-1, 3.65 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Eric Wordekemper (1-0, 0.71 ERA) will take the ball for Sioux City.
Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
