INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI - For the first time in franchise history, a former Missouri Mavericks player has made their NHL debut.
Left winger, Ross Johnston, who played 13 games with the Mavs this season, scoring 4 goals and 7 assists, was recalled to the New York Islanders-the Mavericks NHL affiliate, on an emergency basis yesterday morning. Johnston played just over 16 minutes for the Islanders wearing number 52 in his NHL debut last night against the Philadelphia Flyers, taking 4 penalty minutes and making 6 hits. Box Score.
Ross Johnston became the first former Mavericks player in team history to play in the NHL on Sunday, Apr. 10, 2016.
Johnston, 22, a native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, CA wore number 19 for the Mavericks during the longest home stand in team history, February 6th through February 28th. While playing with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers-Missouri's American Hockey League affiliate, the 6'4", 225lb winger notched another 4 points (1G,3A) through 37 games.
Johnston is the 599th player in ECHL history to go on to play in the NHL, making a rare ECHL to NHL transition in the course of one season. The Mavericks are in the first year of their formal affiliation with the New York Islanders (NHL) and Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL).
The Missouri Mavericks won their last regular season game of the 2015-16 season, taking a 3-1 victory over the Idaho Steelheads on the road Saturday night. The Mavericks will play the Quad City Mallards in Round 1 of their 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs campaign.
Missouri opens the post-season on Saturday, Apr. 16 (7:05p.m.) and Sunday, Apr. 17 (4:05p.m.) at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. Tickets for Game 1 and Game 2 are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com and in-person at the arena box office.
Round 1 will continue in Moline, IL at the iWireless Center on Wednesday, Apr. 20 (6:35p.m.) and Friday, Apr. 22 (7:05p.m.). If necessary, the series will continue on Saturday, Apr. 23 (7:05p.m.) at the iWireless Center for Game 5 and then return to Silverstein Eye Centers Arena on Tuesday, Apr. 26 (7:05p.m.) and Wednesday, Apr. 27 (7:05p.m.) for Game 6 and Game 7.
