Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks got about a game and a half of baseball in.
They beat the Gateway Grizzlies, 7-1, in the opener of a doubleheader. The nightcap was suspended because of rain in the top of the fourth inning with the Grizzlies leading, 1-0.
The crowd of 2,793 at Marinelli Field will have to wait until play is resumed at 5:05 p.m. Saturday. The regularly scheduled ballgame, reduced to seven innings, will follow after a 30-minute interval.
In the opener, Derek Roper pitched a three-hitter to beat the Grizzlies. After Ryan Sullivan led off the Gateway third inning with his 16th home run, Roper retired 11 in a row. Roper (8-4) struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The RiverHawks never trailed. They scored twice in the second, on a Brian Baron double and a on a run-scoring double play off the bat of Ryan Larson, and once in the third, on an Aaron McEachran single. Rockford broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning off Gateway starter Matt Powell (6-3).
In the nightcap, Gateway had just broken a scoreless tie with a two-out error by Rockford second baseman Todd Dulaney when the rain began.
Saturday's pseudo-doubleheader features a pair of promotions. When the gates open at 4:05 p.m., the first 1,000 youngsters through the gate get a RiverHawks baseball glove, sponsored by Amcore Bank and WZOK. Following the games, the RiverHawks will auction off their throwback 1970s-80s Houston Astros-inspired jerseys, with the proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
