San Angelo - Making his professional debut, Kenny Elkind (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven to lead the San Angelo Colts past the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 3-2 tonight at Foster Field.
The Colts (20-9) got on the board against Eric Domangue (0-1) in the top of the first. Bradley Goldsmith led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Jason Landreth hit a two-out RBI-single to make it 1-0.
The WhiteWings (13-16) responded against Elkind in the top of the second. Brian Nichols led off with a double and Alberto Cruz singled, moving Nichols to third. Two outs later, Justin Holloway hit an RBI- single to tie the game.
The WhiteWings took the lead in the fifth. Casey Allen recorded his first-career extra-base hit with a one-out double. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
The lead didn't last long. In the bottom of the fifth, Butch Ballez drew a leadoff walk. Charley Belew laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Domangue's throw to second for the force went into centerfield. Goldsmith laid down a sacrifice bunt and Jason Diaz followed with a two-run single to make it 3-2 Colts.
The WhiteWings' best chance to tie it came in the eighth. Agustin Septimo started the inning with a single off of Brett Lester and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jonathan Poterson drew a nine-pitch walk against Jacob Ramos, who then got Nichols to pop-out. Jameson Maj came to strikeout Cruz to end the inning.
Maj pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
The WhiteWings and Colts play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Foster Field. Right-hander Maximino de la Cruz (1-2) will face right-hander Ezequiel Astacio (3-0).
