Colts Nab Third Straight

San Angelo Colts News Release


San Angelo, Texas--- Jason Diaz flared a single down the left field line scoring Butch Ballez and Charley Belew giving the Colts a 3-2 lead in the fifth, and that would be all the they needed as San Angelo (20-9) defeated the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings (13-16) in game one of the four game series with a score of 3-2.

The Colts would be the first to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff walk to Bradley Goldsmith, Broncos starter Eric Domangue committed a wild pitch and Goldsmith advanced to third base. With two outs in the inning, Jason Landreth sent a line drive single to left field scoring Goldsmith, San Angelo led 1-0.

Former Colt Brian Nichols led off the second inning with a double to left centerfield. A two out single by Justin Holloway scored Nichols tying the game at one.

The game remained tied until the top of the fifth inning. With one out in the frame, Casey Allen doubled over the head of left fielder Ronnie Gaines. After a ground out to the right side by Agustin Septimo, Allen moved to third base. A wild pitch by Colts starter Kenny Elkind brought home Allen as the Whitewings took their first lead of the game 2-1.

San Angelo responded in the bottom half. Butch Ballez began the inning with a walk. Charley Belew laid down the sacrifice bunt to the first base side. Domangue attempted to gun down Ballez at second however the Whitewings left hander threw the ball into the outfield and both runners were safe. Goldsmith executed the slash swing grounding out to first base moving Belew and Ballez to second and third base. Following Goldsmith was Jason Diaz. Diaz flared a single down the left field line scoring both runners lifting the Colts to a 3-2 lead.

The score remained 3-2 as Jameson Maj took the mound in the top of the ninth inning. After relinquishing a lead off single, Maj would get the next three hitters, preserving the win and earning his second save of the year.

Kenny Elkind (1-0), the former Angelo State university ace, earned his first win for the Colts completing five innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out seven. Eric Domangue (0-1) took the loss. Jameson Maj (2) worked the ninth earning the save.

Offensively for the Colts, San Angelo collected four hits while scoring three runs. Jason Diaz had a single with two RBI's. Jason Landreth also contributed a single and an RBI.

San Angelo and Rio Grande Valley will continue their series at Foster Field on Saturday for replica jersey night sponsored by FiberMax . First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Gates will open at 6:05.
