ULB Update for July 10

July 10, 2009 - United League Baseball (ULB) News Release

The San Angelo Colts, winning seven of their last 10 games, have held first place in the United League Baseball for most of the still young season, but the Coastal Bend Thunder are nipping at their heels.

The Colts are 19-9, while the Thunder, who have also won seven of their last 10 games, are 16-12, three games behind.

The league has completed 35 per cent of its 80-game 2009 season, with 52 games left to play.

The others in the league are more than in the running after the first seven series of play.

The Amarillo Dillas (14-14), the defending ULB champions, are in third place, despite the fact they have lost seven of their last 10 games. The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, who finished a 3-1 series with the Dillas, after dropping six consecutive games, are tied with the Edinburg Roadrunners, each at 13-15.

The Laredo Broncos, who are the second best hitting club in the league, nevertheless bring up the rear with a 9-19 record.

The Colts, as a team, are batting .312 and two of their players, Bryan Frichter (.440), and Jason Landreth (.357)) are first and third in hitting.

However, Frichter has been sidelined for four games at this writing, with a broken nose. He is expected to have an operation and could be out for the season.

Although in last place, the Broncos are second in hitting with a .290 mark. The Broncos have won five of their last 10 games, after having a real dry spell in winning.

Amarillo is third in hitting at .276. Next are the WhiteWings at .272, the Roadrunners at .258 and Coastal Bend at .254.

The Colts have the league's only six-game winner in Chandler Bernard. He is followed by teammates Brian Henschel with four (and an 1.94 ERA) and former Astros pitcher Ezequiel Astacio with three. Wings hurler Reymund Cruz also has three wins.

Chase Vacek, San Angelo, Julio Santana, Rio Grande Valley, and Bernie Cepeda, Coastal Bend, all have five saves.

Edinburg's Tim Haines has struck out 37 batters, Wings hurler Reymund Cruz has fanned 32 and Juan Dias, another Wing, has struck out 31.

Wings second baseman Agustin Septimo, just named Wings Most Valuable Player for June, has moved up from ninth place to second in hitting, with a .360 mark. Other top hitters include:

Dave Cardona, Laredo, (.347); Trent Lockwood, Amarillo, (.346); Carlos Figueroa, Amarillo, (.343); Santeil Smith, Amarillo, (.338); Miguel Ortiz, Laredo, (.337); Bradley Goldsmith, San Angelo, (.333) and Mario Mendez, Laredo, (.327);.

Landreth leads in RBIs with 29, Leive Ventura, Coastal Bend, has 28 and Lookwood has 27.

Lockwood leads in home runs with nine. Landreth has eight, followed by Poterson with seven.

Frichter leads in stolen bases with 16 while Dustin Smith, Coastal Bend, son of Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, is second with 15.

The Wings closer, Julio Santana, has five saves as does Chase Vacek, San Angelo.

There was more changing going on the past week. The league got its first ever Japanese player briefly when the WhiteWings signed infielder-outfielder Daisuke Yoshida, who had been playing for the South Maryland Blue Crabs in the Atlantic League.

However, after a couple of games, field manager Eddie Dennis released him.

Also, the Dillas signed free agent infielder Rafael Ozuna and placed infielder Corey Logan and right handed pitcher Josh Smith on the inactive list.

Upcoming games include:

Friday (July 10) through Monday (July 13) -- Laredo at Amarillo, Coastal Bend at Edinburg, and Rio Grande Valley at San Angelo. Tuesday (July 14) - July 17 - Edinburg at Amarillo, Coastal Bend at San Angelo and Rio Grande Valley at Laredo.
