Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

PENSACOLA, Fla. (September 11, 2013) - The 2013 SPHL President's Cup Champion Pensacola Ice Flyers have added a familiar face to their 2013-14 roster with the re-signing of goaltender Johnny Griggs. Griggs will be attending training camp with the Central Hockey League's Wichita Thunder.

"Obviously goaltending is big part of hockey and when you can sign a goaltender and person like John, it's a big day for our team," said Ice Flyer head coach Rod Aldoff. "John is a tremendous goaltender and will be pursuing an opportunity at the AA level. If he happens to make it to Pensacola we will welcome him with open arms, and give him a chance to develop as a pro goaltender."

Griggs (6' 2", 185 lbs., Barrington, Illinois) only played in one game for the Ice Flyers last season after signing with the team on March 8. In that one game he only allowed one goal and made 31 saves to give him a 1-0-0 record, a 1.00 goals against average (GAA), and a 0.969 save percentage (SV%).

Prior to joining the Ice Flyers, Griggs played his senior season at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Over his four-year career he played in 37 games for a Chargers program that was the only NCAA Division I independent for three seasons. He had a 4.09 GAA to go with a 0.886 SV% playing against high power Division I programs such as Boston College, Colorado College, Minnesota State, Nebraska-Omaha, St. Could State, and Wisconsin. Griggs also tallied one assist during his sophomore season.
