CRESTWOOD, ILLINOIS. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, got a compete game effort from Alex Romero en route to a 2-0 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts. It was their first nine inning complete game of the season.
Both starting pitchers seemed to be in control for the first six innings on Tuesday night. Windy City starter Jake Welch (5-4) and Lake Erie starter Alex Romero (7-6) cruised early on and neither team had a real scoring opportunity until the seventh.
Doug Trimble led off the seventh inning with a triple to right-center field. The set up Bryan DeLaRosa, who doubled to give Lake Erie a 1-0 lead. DeLaRosa leads the team with 29 RBIs and 22 doubles.
Dalton Wheat followed with a double of his own and the Crushers had runners on second and third with no outs. That ended the night for Welch who took the loss.
Windy City brought in Drew Peden to replace Welch but a sacrifice fly from Zach Racusin scored DeLaRosa and the Crushers led 2-0.
On the other side, Romero was tossing a gem for Lake Erie. The right-hander allowed a hit in the second and in the third but didn't allow another until the ninth inning. At one point he had retired 13 in a row.
Windy City got a leadoff single from Omar Obregon in the ninth but Romero induced his third double play of the game. He then struck out Axel Johnson to end the game. Romero tied his season-high with 10 strikeouts. He finished with 107 pitches (70 strikes) and issued three walks along the way.
The Crushers move to within two games of first place with the win and their record improves to 39-34. Windy City drops to 31-43.
Game two of the series begins tomorrow at 7:05 CDT. Oriel Caicedo (1-2) gets the start for the Crushers while Braulio Torres-Perez (1-3) goes for the ThunderBolts.
