Round Rock Express News Release
DES MOINES - In a roller coaster battle on a 57-degree, blustery Sunday afternoon, Mike Rodriguez drilled a fastball from Iowa reliever Federico Baez out of Principal Park in the sixth inning, propelling Round Rock to a 6-5 win over the Cubs.
The Express, which came away with a series split, got the scoring started with a two-run first inning. Brooks Conrad's RBI-triple and an RBI-double from Luke Scott were the other scoring blows.
Iowa cut the lead to 2-1 in the second inning, but Round Rock got two, two-out runs in the third on RBI base hits from Hector Giminez and RF Charlton Jimerson to make it 4-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Cubs put up two, two-out runs of their own to make it 4-3. Round Rock took it to 5-3 in the bottom of the frame with Scott's sacrifice fly scoring Joe McEwing, who had doubled and moved to third on a Conrad base hit.
Iowa battled back to tie it at five, putting up two more runs in the fourth.
Rodriguez broke the tie with his second Triple-A homer, blasting a shot onto the newly constructed porch in deep right-center field at Principal Park.
After struggling throughout the contest, starter and winner Ezequiel Astacio pitched a perfect seventh inning. He gave way to reliever Brandon Puffer who pitched two scoreless innings for his fourth save of the season.
Round Rock opens a four game series on Monday at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque. Game time is 8:05 central time with right-hander Joe Valentine making his first start for Round Rock.
