Rodriguez Strikes Out Nine, Spikes Top Crosscutters, 6-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-Sebastian Rodriguezracked up a season-high nine strikeouts over five stellar innings on the mound,Zac Vooletichnotched three hits, and the State College Spikes defeated the Williamsport Crosscutters, 6-2, on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Rodriguez (1-0) earned his first win of the season after starring for the third straight start. The Point Park (Pa.) product yielded two runs, both unearned, on two hits and three walks. Rodriguez, a native of Cayey, Puerto Rico, lowered his earned run average to 1.07 over 25 1/3 innings for the Spikes (13-13 2ndHalf). Over his last three starts, the right-hander has now compiled 23 strikeouts in the span of 16 2/3 innings.

Vooletich, who started 0-for-10 at the plate for the Spikes, has now hit .421 (9-for-21) over his last six games. The Texas Tech product stole a pair of bases on Tuesday and collected his first extra-base hit in Happy Valley with a seventh-inning double.

State College took the lead in the first onBrennen Dorighi's two-out, two-run single to the left side, then added to their advantage onPayton Harden's RBI groundout in the fourth. After a Spikes error allowed two Williamsport (11-14 2ndHalf) runs to score in the fifth, Harden's one-out triple in the sixth, his first-three base hit as a Spike, was the catalyst for the biggest surge of the night.

Josh Leslieknocked in Harden with a single through a drawn-in infield one batter later, and after a wild pitch,Carlos Contrerassingled to the right side to bring in Leslie.Braedon Blackford's single to right-center then moved Contreras to third, with another wild pitch scoring the game's final run shortly thereafter.

Eric Waldichukdelivered two more scoreless innings on the mound for the Spikes in relief of Rodriguez, running his career-opening streak to six straight shutout frames. The righty from Willamette (Ore.) gave up two hits while striking out two batters.

Ty PohlmannandTy Bucknereach recorded a scoreless inning of their own to finish the game, with Pohlmann tallying two strikeouts and Buckner striking out the side in order.

Williamsport starterJohn Mikolaicyk(0-4) took the loss despite all three runs against him being marked as unearned. Mikolaicyk allowed five hits and five walks while striking out seven batters in the effort.

Wednesday, the Spikes and Crosscutters finish the Happy Valley portion of their three-game series with a 6:35 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-handerJonah Jenkins(1-2) will get the ball for State College to oppose Williamsport left-handerSalvatore Ferro(0-3).
