Rocky Mountain Rage Weekly Update

December 15, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

LAST WEEK'S RECORD: 2-0-1

OVERALL RECORD: 8-11-2, 18 pts.

Tied 2nd Place Northwest Division

Dec. 10 vs. Arizona Sundogs, 5-4 Shootout Loss - A back-and-forth battle that saw each club lose its grasp on a pair of one-goal leads, it was the Rage that were forced to overcome the final one-goal deficit when they trailed 4-3 with under two minutes remaining in regulation. Tyler Butler sent the game to overtime when he scored off a shot from the point with the Rage skating on the power play and goaltender Marty Magers pulled in favor of an extra attacker. After neither team scored in OT, Magers stopped three of four Arizona shooters, but his counterpart Marco Emond was a perfect five-for-five to secure the victory.

Dec. 12 vs. Arizona Sundogs, 5-3 Win - Rocky Mountain won the finale of its two-game set with the defending Cup champs behind two goals apiece from Daymen Rycroft and Colt King. In his first game since Nov. 28, Scott Reid picked up the victory in goal by making 24 saves.

Dec. 13 @ Wichita Thunder, 1-0 Shootout Win - Magers achieved a perfect game when he made 31 saves through regulation and overtime before stopping all five Thunder shooters he faced in the tie-breaker. Aaron Davis helped deliver the victory as the only player to score for either team in the shootout.

MAGERS' PERFECT GAME

In the first 1-0 shootout game in the Rage's short three-year history, not only did Marty Magers blank the Wichita Thunder through 65 minutes of play, he also did not yield a single goal in the tie-breaker. There is no record of any goaltender achieving such a feat in the 17-year history of the CHL.

SHOOTOUT FACTS

With its two shootouts last week, Rocky Mountain is now 2-2 in tie-breakers this season. Magers has been between the pipes during all four of them, and Aaron Davis has both of the shootout game-winners.

BACK-TO-BACK W'S

Friday and Saturday's wins marked the second time the Rage have secured back-to-back victories this season. Add on Wednesday's point for the shootout loss, and the team also tied its season-high with a three-game point streak in the standings. Last week's results essentially mirror Rocky Mountain's ledger from three straight games on Nov. 8 (SOL @ Bossier-Shreveport), 14 (W @ New Mexico), and 15 (W @ Odessa).

PENALTY KILL PERFECTION

Some of Magers' best work on Saturday came during the Rage's nine short-handed situations. For just the second time this season the club held the opposition without a power play goal. Rocky Mountain held the Sundogs scoreless over 10 penalty kills during a 4-1 victory on Oct. 25.

SHOT COUNTER FIRSTS

Saturday's effort also delivered the Rage's first victory of the year when out-shot by the opposition. Wichita had the edge in shots 31-29, but Rocky Mountain still prevailed to up its record to 1-5-1 when getting out-gunned. The team had not been out-shot since Nov. 26, a span of six consecutive games.

CULLATON MAKES MORE RAGE HISTORY

Brent Cullaton etched his name in the Rage record books when he became the franchise's all-time leading scorer earlier this season. His name was entered again last Wednesday when he scored a goal eight seconds into the second period against the Sundogs. The tally is now the quickest goal ever scored by Rocky Mountain at the start of a period, besting the old mark of nine seconds established by John DiPace during the 2006-07 season.

SECOND PLACE AT STAKE

Second place in the Northwest Division will be on the line this week when the Rage (8-11-2, 18 pts.) and Rush (6-9-6, 18 pts.) face-off in a home-and-home set. Their first two meetings of the year were both won by Rocky Mountain - 4-3 in a shootout on Nov. 22 in Broomfield and 3-1 on Dec. 3 in Rapid City.
