Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Winston-Salem, NC --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (3-2) earned split in a doubleheader with the Winston-Salem Warthogs (3-2) at Ernie Shore Field on Saturday night. Wilmington lost the opener, 8-5, but won the nightcap, 5-4. The Blue Rocks have won 11 of their 15 games against the Warthogs this season.
The nightcap saw Wilmington rally from an early 1-0 deficit. In the third, Wilmington had the bases loaded with one out and Jeff Corsaletti at the plate when a wild pitch by Wes Whisler (7-5) got past catcher Cole Armstrong. Ian Bladergroen scored from third base and the Rocks tied the game, 1-1.
The Blue Rocks took the lead in the fourth. Claudio Arias, playing in his first game since he was activated off the disabled list on Monday, lined a single off the glove of third baseman Chris Kelly. Andrew Pinckney followed with a double, and two batters later, Scott White delivered. White broke out of a 1-for-19 funk by drilling a two-out, two-run single up the middle, giving Wilmington a 3-1 lead.
The Hogs added a single run in the fourth for a 3-2 game, but Wilmington got another two insurance runs in the sixth for a 5-2 lead.
Arias started the inning with a double to left and two batters later, Bladergroen tripled to right, scoring Arias. White came to the plate and earned his third RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Hogs got another run in the sixth, and entered the seventh down 5-3 against closer Mike James. Victor Mercedes pinch hit for Garret Guest and doubled to right. Two batters later, Jose De Los Santos drove him in with a single up the middle for a 5-4 game. Josh Hansen followed with a single to left and Kelly flew out to right, allowing De Los Santos to take third base.
With runners at the corners and two outs, James got Cook to ground a ball up the middle. Chuck Jeroloman, who made his first start at shortstop all season, dove hard to his left, gloved the ball and from his knees flipped the ball to second for a force to end the game.
Starter Andrew Dobies (6-3) earned his first win since May 17 at Lynchburg with 5.1 innings of three-run, five-hit ball. The lefty walked two and struck out five.
James got his 13th save of the season despite allowing a run on three hits in one inning.
In the opener, Wilmington rallied from a deficit twice, but lost a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning. Winston-Salem worked four straight walks at the start of the inning and all four of the men who walked came around to score. Starter Matt Goodson (0-4) allowed a pair of walks before giving way to reliever Beau Vaughan, who also walked a pair of men, driving in a run for a 5-5 tie.
Vaughan then allowed back-to-back, one-out hits, first, a two-run single to Cory Haggerty, then, an RBI single by Chris Amador, as the Hogs led 8-5. In the seventh, Wilmington got a base hit by Matt Kent before Dewon Day got the next three men in order for his second save of the season.
Goodson went five-plus innings allowing six runs on four hits, all one-out solo homers. The right-hander walked three and struck out three.
Winston-Salem's Jay Marshall (4-1) got the win in relief with two innings of four-hit ball, walking one and striking out three.
Jeff Corsaletti and Andrew Pinckney each drove in a pair of runs for the Rocks in the loss while Matt Kent collected a pair of hits.
The Blue Rocks conclude the three-game series with a rubber match on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. Right-hander Kevin Guyette (0-0, 3.60) throws for Wilmington against right-hander Adam Russell (6-2, 2.38).
GAME NOTES: No Blue Rock had allowed more than two homers in a single outing until Matt Goodson allowed four homers, all one-out solo shots, while taking the loss in game one.
Jeff Natale went 1-for-3 with a single, a walk, a strikeout and a run scored in game one. However, the former NCAA Division III college star at Trinity College went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the nightcap. Natale went 22 straight games reaching base with a hit or a walk as a Blue Rock, tying the mark hit by Jeff Corsaletti at the start of the season.
Ian Bladergroen went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and two runs scored in game two. It marks the third triple of the season for the usual first baseman.
Claudio Arias went 2-for-4 with a double, a strikeout and two runs scored in game two. Arias had not seen action since June 4 versus Salem. The corner outfielder was on the disabled list from June 7-20 with a strained oblique, suffered during batting practice on June 7 when Arias was a late scratch from that night's starting lineup.
