Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - With thunder and lightning just minutes away the Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored two of the most timely runs of the year in the top of the 7th. Trailing 3-1 the Birds pushed across two runs and tied the game before rain saturated Lynchburg City Stadium and forced a suspension of play with the score 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th inning in the series finale. The rest of the game will be completed as part of a doubleheader on August 14th in Lynchburg.
As they had in the first two games of the series the Pelicans drew first blood with a run in the top of the 3rd inning. With two outs SS Jaime Trejo blasted a one-hopper against the wall in left-centerfield. The next batter, 2B J.C. Holt followed with a clutch double down the left field line, scoring Trejo to give the Birds a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg finally figured out Pelicans starter Jo-Jo Reyes in the top of the 4th and tied the game at 1-1. After Reyes had worked a no-hitter through three frames, CF Nyjer Morgan led off the 4th with an infield single and proceeded to steal his league-leading 38th base of the season. Later in the inning Morgan would score on a sacrifice fly to left from LF Mike Carlin.
An inning later, in the 5th, the Cats took the lead, 2-1, on a controversial play. A lead-off single smacked by RF Brad Correll coupled with a walk drawn by DH Brad Rea put runners at first and second with no outs. Both runners would later advance a base on an error charged to Reyes on a pick off attempt at second base. With runners at second and third C John Suomi lifted a high fly ball in foul territory down the left field line, which was caught by SS Jaime Trejo. Correll attempted to tag from third and beat the throw to the plate by Trejo to give Lynchburg the lead. After Correll came across to score, the Pelicans appealed the run saying that Correll left too early from third. The appeal was denied and the run was upheld much to the disappointment of Pelicans manager Rocket Wheeler, who disputed the call and was eventually ejected.
The Hillcats added a run in the 6th thanks to a comedy of errors by the Pelicans. With SS Brian Bixler at first base, after a single, Myrtle Beach reliever Moises Hernandez uncorked a wild throw to first on a pick-off attempt. Bixler eventually made his way around the bases thanks to a second error, on an errant throw from 1B Kala Ka'aihue to third base. Bixler's run gave Lynchburg a 3-1 advantage.
In the 7th, the Birds pulled to within one run, 3-2, when C Xan Barksdale cranked a lead-off, solo home run over the left field fence. The homer was Barkdale's 2nd longball of the season, and was just his second hit of the year. Following the homer, RF Steven Doetsch reached on a walk and moved to second on a single from Trejo. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt pushed down by Holt to get into scoring position. CF Matt Young then tied the game with a sacrifice fly RBI to left field, scoring Doetsch from third to make it 3-3, just before the skies opened up.
Pelicans starter Jo-Jo Reyes made his Carolina League debut and shined, throwing a no-no through three innings. He finished the day tossing 5.2 innings in which he allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and fanned seven. He will not factor into the decision when the game is completed in August.
The Pelicans finish the road trip to Virginia 4-1 head into the All-Star break in first place in the Southern Division of the Carolina League. The next Pelicans home game is set for Thursday, June 29th when the Birds welcome to Frederick Keys to town for a three-game series.
