Rocks Finish off Sweep of Dash
April 10, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - MJ Melendez drove in two and Kyle Isbel added a pair of hits as the Wilmington Blue Rocks beat the Winston-Salem Dash 4-1 on Wednesday at Frawley Stadium. The victory completed a three-game sweep for the Blue Crew and extended their winning streak to five.
Wilmington wasted little time jumping in front, scoring a pair in the bottom of the first. Isbel opened the afternoon with a double. Blake Perkins then worked a walk and the Rocks got on the board thanks to an RBI-fielder's choice grounder from Nick Pratto. Winston-Salem starter Zach Lewis proceeded to walk Brewer Hicklen, Melendez and Dennicher Carrasco in succession, with the last free pass forcing in a run.
Winston-Salem cut the deficit in half in the second, but Blue Rocks starter Daniel Lynch did a nice job limiting damage. A ground-ball double play helped as did a bases-loaded grounder to second that ended the frame.
The Rocks increased their advantage in the third. Melendez stroked a one-out RBI-double to dead center and then came home on a wild pitch.
Lynch saw the Dash load the bases again in the fourth, this time with no outs. The lefty struck out Zach Remilard and then turned matters over to his bullpen. Robert Garcia entered and stranded all three inherited runners thanks to a strikeout and a fly ball to center.
Garcia (1-0) would hold the Dash off the board through the sixth to pick up the win. Collin Snyder provided two scoreless innings of bridge work before Tyler Zuber worked a scoreless ninth to earn his second save in as many tries this season.
Wilmington plays its first road game of the season on Thursday at Carolina. Prospect right-hander Brady Singer (0-1, 3.38) gets the ball for the Blue Rocks, while Carolina counters with right-hander Nelson Hernandez (1-0, 1.80). First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. and fans can catch all the action on 89.7 WGLS-FM or BlueRocks.com.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
The Rocks' pitching staff continues to excel. Wilmington held the Dash to just a single score on Wednesday and five runs total in the three-game sweep. Since the season-opening loss to Salem, the Blue Crew has yielded eight scores in the last six contests. A big part of the reason for their success has been the ability to wiggle out of tight spots. The Dash went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position on Wednesday and 2-for-25 with men at second and/or third base in the series.
Despite a 5-2 start the Blue Rocks continue to struggle to both catch and hit the ball. Wilmington committed another error in the win on Wednesday. The Rocks' also had three errors on Tuesday, which marked the second time the Blue Crew had three defensive miscues in a contest this season. Wilmington has now committed an error in all but one game this year and leads the Carolina League with 12 total defensive miscues in 2019. Meanwhile, on offense the Rocks managed only three hits on Wednesday and just 12 total in the three-game sweep. They are last in the 10-team loop with a team batting average of .138 after seven games. Nevertheless, Wilmington has won five straight games for the first time since last July, when the club took six straight from July 23-28.
Wednesday's game was played in front of 6,313 fans at Frawley Stadium, Wilmington's largest crowd of the season and the biggest at Frawley Stadium since 6,924 attended the Rocks game on August 24 of last year.
