Rocks Fall In Kinston, 7-2

Kinston, NC --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (25-27) never led in dropping the finale of their three-game series with the Kinston Indians (35-17) on Wednesday morning, 7-2. The Rocks lost two of three in the series and posted a 2-4 record on their six-game road trip. The Rocks have lost four of their last five games.

Kinston took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against starter Gary Galvez (2-2) on an RBI double by Brian Barton. The Blue Rocks tied it up on an RBI single off the bat of Mickey Hall in the second inning, but fell behind again in the third. A lead-off double by Jose Constanza led to an RBI groundout by Stephen Head as the K-Tribe earned a 2-1 lead. The Indians would never trail again in the game.

Galvez, making his first start since a shoulder strain on May 10 sent him to the disabled list, allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over three innings with two strikeouts.

Kinston added to their lead in the fourth on a two-run homer by Matt Whitney against reliever Jason Richardson. It was 7-1 in favor of Kinston after eight innings as reliever Randy Newsom allowed three runs over the seventh and eighth innings.

Wilmington loaded the bases in the ninth and got a run off an RBI single by Jacoby Ellsbury for the 7-2 final.

Indians' starting pitcher Joe Ness (5-0) allowed just one run over five and one-third innings. Ness allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four.

The Blue Rocks return home for an eight-game, seven-day home stand starting Thursday, June 1. The Salem Avalanche will be in town for the five-game, four-day series that includes a scheduled doubleheader on Friday.

Lefty Tommy Hottovy (4-3, 2.33) starts on Thursday against Salem right-hander Chad Reinke (4-4, 2.93). First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.

GAME NOTES:

Jacoby Ellsbury was caught stealing in the fourth inning. Ellsbury was caught stealing three times on the road trip.

Kinston left 12 runners on base, seven in scoring position.

Wilmington is now 1-6 in seven games at Grainger Stadium.

The latest addition to Wilmington's roster, catcher/infielder Zak Farkes made his first plate appearance in the game as a Blue Rock. Farkes, pinch-hittng for Mickey Hall in the ninth inning, earned a walk. The Boston native and Harvard graduate spent last season with Short Season-A Lowell (NYP).
