Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, MD -- Mario Garza's first inning three-run home run was too much for the Keys to overcome on Wednesday night, as Salem avoided a sweep, defeating Frederick 6-4.
Keys' starter Kevin Hart allowed the lead-off hitter to reach base in five of his six innings pitched, as Salem would tag him for six runs.
It was a rough first inning for Hart. After retiring the first batter, Hart walked Ervin Alcantara and allowed a single to Drew Sutton. Mario Garza followed with a three-run home run over the right field wall to put Salem in front 3-0.
Dustin Yount led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right field, his fifth of the year, off Ronnie Martinez, to bring the Keys within two.
The Keys closed the lead to a run in the bottom of the third inning. Yount walked to load the bases and Josh McCurdy reached on an infield single to allow Nolan Reimold to cross the plate.
But Salem would distance themselves from the Keys in the top of the fourth inning. Scott Robinson doubled to lead off, Neil Sellers followed with a single and Francisco Caraballo singled to drive in Robinson for the first run.
Edwin Maysonet would reach base on an error by Yount, allowing Sellers to score. On the same play Pete Maestrales missed a relay throw at first base to allow Caraballo to score, putting the Avalanche in front 6-2.
Pete Maestrales would hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and Reimold would score a run on a Bryan Bass double in the bottom of the ninth inning, but they could not manage to overcome the Avalanche's early offensive production.
Kevin Hart (2-5) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned on seven hits over 6.0 innings. Jeff Montani tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Jeff Wigdahl earned the victory allowing a run on one hit in 3.0 innings of relief for Salem.
The Carolina League-leading Kinston Indians come to town on Thursday to begin a four game series with the Frederick Keys. RHP Scott Lewis will take the hill against the Keys' RHP Luis Ramirez.
