(Newark, N.J., July 25) - Bobby Blevins pitched into the seventh inning for his sixth win of the season and Keith Brachold hit a two-run homer as the Rockland Boulders snapped a two-game losing streak, beating the Newark Bears 4-1 at Riverfront Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Blevins (6-6), allowed only one earned run on three hits and four walks in his 6.2 innings, keeping Newark scoreless over the first six innings before surrendering his first run in the seventh, a solo home run by Juan Martinez.

Newark starter and former Boulder Julian Sampson (3-6) made his first start against his old team, and took the loss, giving up four earned runs in his six innings.

Rockland got the scoring underway in the top of the third, when Sampson lost control of the strike zone. Billy Alvino walked, moved to second and third on two wild pitches, then scored on a third wild pitch by the Bears' right-hander. Sampson walked four Boulder batters in the frame, but escaped with only one run allowed.

In the fourth, the Boulders took a 2-0 advantage when Ryan Scoma singled, stole second base, then scored on a Brandon Pinckney RBI single. Rockland then put the game away in the fifth inning on Brachold's league-leading 20th blast of the season, which gave his team a 4-0 lead.

That was enough for Blevins, who struggled with his control, as he walked four batters, but did enough to win his second consecutive decision. Garrett Johnson and Adrian Martin finished the game with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, as Martin earned his 11th save of the year.

The Boulders and Bears have split the first two games of this three-game set, with the rubber match tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Provident Bank Park, as Jon Velasquez takes the hill for Rockland.

It's a Fireworks-Extravaganza after the game and tickets are still available but they're going fast - to catch all the fun and action, call 845-364-0009, visit the Provident Bank Park box office, or click "Tickets" here on Rocklandboulders.com.
