Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Mike Gedman pitched seven effective innings, allowing just one earned run, but the New Jersey Jackals swept the Worcester Tornadoes with a 5-2 win on Wednesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. All but one of the runs in the entire game were unearned.

Chris Curran, Matt Cusick and Nick Giarraputo all scored in the three-run first for New Jersey. With two outs and runners on the corners, Gedman registered his second straight strikeout, but a passed ball allowed Giarraputo to take first, Cusick to move into scoring position, and Curran to come home for the game's first run. The next run came in on a Johnny Welch error to extend the inning, and Carlos Guzman added an RBI single one batter later to cap the scoring in the frame.

The Tornadoes answered back with a run of their own in the top of the second, when aggressive base running from Alex Nunez made the difference. Nunez darted for second base on a bloop into right, and Guzman's throw was wild, allowing Alex to take third. He scored on a Cam Kneeland sacrifice fly.

The Jackals added another run in the fifth on another passed ball, the third of the game. Curran, who led off the inning with a first pitch drag bunt, came in to score from third.

New Jersey tallied a run two innings later, as Giarraputo singled home Cusick as part of a two-out rally after a double play.

The Tornadoes pulled one run closer with a Johnny Welch RBI single to plate Cam Monger, who doubled to lead off the eighth off of Jimmer Kennedy.

Steve Fox notched the win, allowing just three hits and a walk in seven innings, giving up one unearned run. Kennedy gave up an unearned run in the eighth, and Keith Cantwell had a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

Gedman had the defeat, despite striking out six batters, giving up just one walk and allowing eight hits. He retired the Jackals in order twice.

Both the Tornadoes and Jackals have an off day Thursday. It's the first non-traveling off-day for Worcester in over a month. Game one of the seven-game homestand is Friday night at 7:05, as the Tornadoes take on the Rockland Boulders for the second series in a week. Pre-game coverage starts on USTREAM.tv at 6:50.
