Rockies Hang on for Doubleheader Split

July 7, 2016 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release

Matt Dennis struck out Jahmai Jones with a 2-2 fastball with the tying run standing at third base preserving the Grand Junction Rockies 5-4 win over the Owlz in game 2 of a doubleheader Wednesday night in Orem.

Dennis struck out the side in the seventh, but allowed a pinch-hit double to Nick Flair with 2-out, and he advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Dennis worked out of the jam to earn his first save.

Orem trailed 5-0 going into the bottom of the sixth after Luis Guzman held Orem to three hits over five shutout innings, but they scored four unearned runs off Lorenz Ozuna forcing Dennis into the game to get the last out of the frame.

Guzman struck out five without walking anyone and threw 58 pitches, 45 for strikes in his second win of the season.

Joel Diaz put the Rockies on top with a 2-out, 2-run single in the top of the first. Hunter Melton doubled home a run in the third, while Taylor Snyder singled home a run in the fourth. Manny Melendez homered in the sixth to give the Rockies their fifth run.

Jonathan Piron had the Rockies only multi-hit game, but Jose Gomez reached all four times thanks to a single and three walks.

In game one, Orem scored four first inning runs off Yohander Quintana on their way to a 9-1 win. Snyder homered for the Rockies.

At the halfway point of the first half, the Rockies are 10-9 on the season, two games back of Orem for first place in the South Division. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
