HELENA, MONT. - Missoula scored twice in the sixth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit, but allowed three runs on five hits in the seventh inning, as the Helena Brewers (9-11) earned a 5-2 victory over the Osprey (9-11) on Thursday night from Kindrick Legion Field.
The Brewers gained momentum on the defensive side of the ball in the top of the seventh with the game tied, as Missoula loaded the bases with one out, but failed to score. Karsen Lindell, who was pitching in the jam, induced a pop up from Max Brown for the first out before getting Jasrado Chisholm to fly out down the left field line to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
The Osprey managed only five hits while scoring twice. Max Brown single-handedly contributed the first run of the game for the O's, singling through the right side before stealing second and third. On the throw to third to try to nab him stealing, catcher Nathan Rodriguez fired down the left field line, allowing Brown to get to his feet and scamper home. Missoula's second run in the sixth was also a gift, as Ramon Hernandez reached with a hit-by-pitch before scoring on three wild pitches.
Helena benefitted from a pair of homers on Thursday, as Rodriguez belted his first of the year in the fourth to break up a scoreless game. Franly Mallen contributed the second big homer, breaking a 2-2 tie with a leadoff homer in the three-run seventh. The round-tripper was Mallen's first of the season.
Osprey starter Pierce Romero took a no decision after allowing just two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.0 innings before turning the ball over to Williams Durruthy. Durruthy was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits and one walk over the final 3.0 innings.
Thomas Jankins was impressive for Helena in his second start of the year, dealing 4.0 scoreless frames with four strikeouts. Lindell, who escaped the seventh-inning jam and earned the victory to move to 1-2, allowed a pair of runs over 3.0 innings before Quintin Torres-Costa threw the final 2.0 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the year.
The Osprey will conclude a two-game series with the Brewers on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday's game will be the last between the two teams in the first half of the 2016 season.
