Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Beau Taylor and Jake Goebbert each hit grand slam home runs for Midland to lead the RockHounds to a 14-4 rout of the Hooks in front of 4,824 fans at Whataburger Field Thursday night.

The two pitching staffs combined to walk 16 hitters. The Hooks tied their season-high by issuing nine free passes in a three hour, 56 minute game, which qualified as Corpus Christi's longest nine-inning contest this season.

Anthony Aliotti started the scoring when he smacked the first pitch he saw from Hooks starter Ruben Alaniz in the first inning into the visitor's bullpen for his ninth long ball of the season, but the Hooks answered quickly with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.

George Springer doubled to start the game for the second straight night and Jose Martinez singled to put runners on the corners for Jonathan Singleton. Singleton hit a fly ball to shallow right field and Springer tagged up, slid around the tag and scored to tie the game. Domingo Santana followed with a base hit and Erik Castro struck before Jonathan Meyer singled to score Martinez and give Corpus Christi a 2-1 lead.

Alaniz flirted with trouble throughout, allowing five baserunners combined in the second and third innings, but benefitted from a couple strikeouts and a double play.

He got burned in the fourth on home runs by Dusty Coleman and Conner Crumbliss, pushing the RockHounds ahead 4-2.

Corpus Christi (36-23) immediately squared the score in the home half on a hit batter and four walks - the final two coaxed by Jio Mier and Jose Martinez with the bases loaded.

Andrew Robinson provided effective relief for the Hooks, working 1.1 scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and one walk and struck out a batter. Jorge De Leon followed Robinson out of the Hooks bullpen and got through the sixth inning unscathed.

The first three hitters in the top of the seventh reached against De Leon (0-1) before Beau Taylor hit a grand slam, his second home run of the season, to make it 8-4 RockHounds. Kenny Long came out of the bullpen for the Hooks in the eighth and allowed two more runs, including a run-scoring single to Taylor.

Long left the game after he put two runners aboard in the top of the ninth inning. Matt Heidenreich allowed a single to the first hitter he faced, before Goebbert belted a grand slam onto the berm in right-center field. It was the first time in team history that the Hooks allowed multiple slams in a game.

Mike DeMark (1-1) picked up the win in relief for Midland by tossing two and two-thirds scoreless innings.

The Hooks' series with the RockHounds will conclude Friday night at 7:05 when Midland southpaw Carlos Hernandez (2-4, 3.19 ERA) squares off against the Corpus Christi duo of David Martinez (8-0, 2.56) and Mike Foltynewicz (1-0, 1.23). Whataburger Field will be abuzz with activity as CPL Retail Energy presents Breakin' BBoy McCoy, Bud Light launches Friday Fireworks and Hidden Valley offers fans a sample of ranch dressing as they exit the ballpark.
