Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.- In its first crack at the shootout this season, the Rockford IceHogs dropped a 4-3 contest to the Bloomington PrairieThunder in front of 3,878 at the Rockford MetroCentre on Friday night. After Preston Mizzi and Kaleb Betts scored on the Hogs first two attempts, Bloomington goalie Shaun Braunlich shut down Rockford's final three shooters to preserve the win.

PrairieThunder forwards Alex Goupil, B.J. Gaustad and Mathieu Brunelle beat IceHogs goalie Brenden Cuthbert in the extra session to help Bloomington earn the extra point. The game was sent to a shootout after the Thunder overcame a two-goal deficit. Defenseman Jeff Cameron blasted home a game-tying power-play tally at 13:47 of the third period.

The game-changing goal, however, came in the second frame. After Rockford tallied three times to take the 3-1 lead, Bloomington winger Tyler Rennette pounced on his own rebound on a breakaway and flipped it passed Cuthbert at 16:05 to swing the momentum back to Bloomington's side.

Rockford entered the second period trailing 1-0, but that didn't last long as rookie winger Kaleb Betts potted his team-leading seventh goal of the season on the power play at 2:47 to tie the contest. At 12:42 winger Robin Big Snake shot in his second marker of the season past Braunlich to give the Hogs the advantage before Betts added his second of the night at 13:33. The first Bloomington goal was scored in the first when Mike Adamek scored his first of the season at 16:44.

The IceHogs set a season-high in the second period with 22 shots, but shot a season low in the third period with only four. Betts had his team-leading third multi-goal game of the season and winger Kevin Ulanski added a pair of assists. Cuthbert made 32 saves in the shootout loss while Braunlich earned his second win of the season turning away 32 Rockford shots. The two teams also combined for a season-low 16 penalty minutes.
