Rockers Pile up Base Runners in Blowout Win

GASTONIA, N.C. - The High Point Rockers brought out the heavy lumber Saturday night in downing Gastonia 12-4 at CaroMont Health Park. The Rockers pounded out 17 hits and received 10 walks while the High Point pitching staff held the Honey Hunters to six hits.

The Rockers had to overcome a 3-0 deficit early as the Honey Hunters touched High Point starter Cooper Casad for three runs in the first.

High Point cut the lead to 3-1 when Jerry Downs doubled in the fourth inning and scored on a single by Stuart Levy.

The Rockers tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth as Johnny Field, Michael Russell and Stephen Cardullo drew consecutive walks with one out. Downs was then walked to force in Field before Levy delivered a sacrifice fly to score Russell.

High Point added a single run in the sixth when J.R. DiSarcina singled to score Adam Taylor who had also reached on a single.

The Rockers then scored seven times in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach with an 11-4 lead. Downs hit a lead-off homer to start the merry-go-round. Field doubled with the bases loaded to score three runs. Cardullo singled to score Field and Russell scored when Downs reached on a fielding error. Jared Mitchell drove in a run on a single to right to conclude the seventh inning scoring. Mitchell doubled to score Downs in the ninth for an insurance run and to account for the 12-4 final.

High Point's bullpen received scoreless innings from Brian Clark in the seventh, Max Povse in the eighth and Joey Hennessey in the ninth.

Field finished the game with three hits and three RBI while Downs and Mitchell each had three hits and a pair of runs driven in. Levy finished the night with two RBI.

Casad would wind up throwing five innings and allowing just four hits and the three first inning runs while striking out three as his record improved to 2-0.

The Rockers and Honey Hunters will conclude their three game series on Sunday at 4:50 p.m. at CaroMont Health Park.
