Rock Cats Get Big Leaguer

New Britain, CT- The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, has received OF Wilkin Ramirez. Ramirez spent some of last season in the Major League's with the Atlanta Braves. He also played for the Detroit Tigers in 2009. Ramirez signed with the Twins as a free agent last November and has been rehabbing an injury in Ft. Myers, Florida. He will join the Rock Cats on their current road trip in Harrisburg, PA and will be available to play tonight. Ramirez will become the 7th player with Major League service time to suite up for New Britain in 2012 (Pedro Florimon, Luke French, Jason Marquis, Darren Mastrioanni, Lester Oliveros, Luis Perdomo)

Ramirez, 26, batted .231 (6-26) in 20 games with the Atlanta Braves last season, after spending most of the year at Triple-A Gwinnett (International League). He batted .267 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI with 19 stolen bases in 81 games with the Gwinnett Braves. In 2009, he went 4-11 (.364) with a home run and 3 RBI in 15 games for the Detroit Tigers. Ramirez went 10-37 (.270) with two doubles, a triple, one home run and 5 RBI in 35 games in the Major Leagues.

The 6'2, 190 pound right-handed hitter, was signed by the Tigers in 2003 as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Ramirez made his Major League debut and ripped a solo home run for his first MLB hit May 20, 2009 vs Texas (LHP Matt Harrison), helping Justin Verlander and the Tigers beat the Rangers 5-3. He also participated in the Major League Futures game in 2008 at Yankee Stadium and 2010 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

The Rock Cats roster is now at 24 active players, one short of the Eastern League maximum.
