Rock acquire Mat Giles and Scott Campbell via trades on day of Expansion Draft

TORONTO - The Toronto Rock acquired veterans Mat Giles and Scott Campbell in a pair of trades with the Edmonton Rush and Portland Lumberjax on Wednesday, after losing three youngsters in the 2005 National Lacrosse League Expansion Draft.
Giles was acquired in a trade with Portland in exchange for the Rock's first selection (11th overall) in the dispersal draft to be held later this month of players from the now-defunct Anaheim Storm franchise. Giles, a forward, excels at both ends of the floor, and he will make an immediate impact with the Rock. He is a key member of the Peterborough Lakers in the Ontario Major Series League, and is familiar with Coach / GM Terry Sanderson after playing for him in Ottawa and Montreal. He had 10 goals and 13 assists with Rochester in 2005. He adds some size and physical presence as well standing at 6'3", and weighing in at 240 lbs.
Campbell was acquired in a trade after the expansion draft. The Rock sent left-handed forward Jimmy Quinlan, an Edmonton native, to the Rush in return for the 23-year-old Campbell. He will help to bolster the Rock's solid defensive core. Campbell's season came to an abrupt end in 2005 after breaking two bones in his lower right leg. But the Whitby, ON, native will add a physical presence a 6'0", 220 lbs., and help keep the opposition's offensive threats off the scoreboard.
Chapman, a native of St. Catharines, ON, and Forget, a native of Ingersoll, ON, were both picked in the Expansion Draft earlier in the afternoon.
Forget, a defenseman, was selected fifth overall by the Portland Lumberjax. The Rock were then able to protect another player on their unprotected roster, and chose to put defenseman Dan Ladouceur back under protection. Then the Edmonton Rush selected the right-handed forward Chapman. No team could lose more than two players in the Expansion Draft.
"We were very fortunate to pick up two decent players today," said head coach and general manager Terry Sanderson. "Edmonton was really keen on Jimmy Quinlan being a hometown kid, and with Chappy and Luke they're both very talented players too. But that's the price you pay for expansion."
"We've added some depth and toughness, so I feel we got some really good value in return. I wish Jimmy, Luke and Sandy the best of luck with their new teams. I'm sure they'll all do well and I'm sorry to see them go."
The Rush and the Lumberjax each selected nine players from the league's current teams as their rosters begin to take shape for the 2006 season. Complete results of the expansion draft are listed below (Rock-related activity listed in bold). Portland won first selection by virtue of a coin toss held at the Board of Governors meetings in Las Vegas last month.
