-Will have taken 3 of 4 games in Columbus for the 4th time in the last 5 seasons
MORE FROM LAST NIGHT...:
-The Wings hit a season-high 5 home runs... the most HR's hit in a game by the Wings since hitting 6 on 7/6/11 vs PAW... Rochester is now T-2nd in the IL with 28 HR on the season... 22 of the team's 28 HR's have come on the road
-Rochester tied a season-high with 29 total bases and 7 extra base hits (5 HR, 2 2B)... Other time was 4/7 vs. BUF
-Jeff Clement and Clete Thomas were the first Wings with multi home run games this season.
VS. THE CLIPPERS: The Red Wings won the 2012 season series against Columbus 6-2 -- including taking 3 of 4 from the Clippers at Huntington Park in Columbus. In fact, the Wings have taken 3 of 4 from the Clippers in 3 of their last 4 trips to Columbus with the lone exception coming in 2011 when Rochester was swept (0-4)... The Red Wings season series win in 2012 was their first against Columbus since 2009 when they went 5-3. Since 2003, Rochester is now 41-42 against Columbus and 22-22 at Huntington Park... The two clubs will play in each other 5 more times over the next 9 days as the Clippers are scheduled to make their lone appearance to Frontier Field, May 10-13.
CLUBBIN' CLETE: Red Wings OF Clete Thomas continued his torrid streak on Saturday going 2-for-5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. He extended his hitting streak to a season-high and tied for team-high 9 games and now has collected multiple hits in 4 straight games and in 5 of 6 contests. Over the last 6 games, Thomas is batting .481 (13-for-27) with 2 doubles, 4 home runs, 7 runs scored and 6 RBI... Thomas moved atop the IL in SLG (.700) and OBP (.476) while still ranking 2nd in batting average (.386)
-In his 18 starts this season, Thomas has failed to reach base in just one game -- 4/17 vs SWB last game before streak
-Thomas' career long hitting streak is 12 games from 4/6-4/19/06 with Lakeland (Tigers) in the Florida State League.
STREAKING WINGS: The Red Wings currently have 5 players riding a 5-game hitting streak or longer... Along with Thomas, OF Joe Benson extended his hitting streak to 9 games Saturday over which he is hitting .314 (11-for-35) with 2 doubles, 2 triples, a home run, 7 runs scored and 3 RBI. Prior to going on this tear, Benson had just one extra-base hit and was hitting .158 on the season following an 0-for-6 night on 4/23... OF Chris Colabello is riding a season-high 6-game streak after his second 4-hit performance of the year on Saturday (4-for-5; 2B, HR, 2 R, RBI). Over the streak he is hitting .423 (11-for-26) with 3 doubles, a homer, 6 runs scored and 3 RBI. The Wings slugger ranks 2nd in the IL with 7 HR and 64 total bases... C Chris Herrmann has hit in 5 straight and in 10 of his last 11 games (16-for-48; .333) with 5 runs scored and 7 RBI raising his average from .175 on 4/21 to .261 entering play tonight... OF Evan Bigley has a 6-game hitting streak and has collected a base knock in 11 of his last 12 games.
PINPOINT CONTROL: Red Wings pitchers continued their dominance over the strike zone on Saturday walking only one hitter. Starter Liam Hendriks didn't yield a walk extending the rotation's streak without allowing a free pass to 23 innings (Virgil Vasquez walked Eugenio Velez in the 7th inning on Monday)... The last trip through the rotation starting with Hendriks' outing on 4/28 vs. BUF, Wings starting pitchers have walked just one batter in the last 35 innings.
-After yielding 72 walks over the first 19 games of the season (3.79 BB/G), the Wings have only walked 15 batters in the last 10 games (1.50 BB/G)... No coincidence, Rochester was 5-14 over the first 19 games and 7-3 over their last 10 contests.
-Rochester has allowed just 87 walks this season -- 2nd least in the IL... SWB leads with just 73 walks
DEDUNO RETURNS TO ROTATION: After missing the first 29 games of the season with a groin strain, RHP Samuel Deduno was activated off the disabled list and will make his 2013 season debut today against the Clippers... Deduno made 9 starts with Rochester at the beginning of the 2012 season going 1-2 with a 2.14 ERA (10 ER/42.0 IP) before having his contract selected by Minnesota on July 6. Deduno finished the season with the Twins going 6-5 with a 4.44 ERA (39 ER/79.0 IP) in 15 starts... The 29-year-old shined in the 2013 World Baseball Classic posting a 2-0 record with a 0.69 ERA (1 ER/13.0 IP). The right-hander earned the win in the WBC championship game against Puerto Rico allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings... To make room for Deduno on the roster, OF Brandon Boggs was released by Minnesota after hitting just .184 with 2 HR and 8 RBI in 21 games w/ ROC this year.
