Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Lawrenceville, Ga. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) did not allow Saturday's rainout to dampen their hot streak, as they swept a doubleheader from the Gwinnett Braves (Atlanta) on Sunday afternoon to extend their winning streak to eight games. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took game one by a score of 5-1, and triumphed in game two, 2-1.
The RailRiders opened their scoring in game one in the second inning. With two outs, David Adams was hit by a pitch from Gwinnett starter Tim Corcoran. Zoilo Almonte followed with a home run that went off the batter's eye in center field. It gave SWB a 2-0 advantage after two and a half innings.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added another run in the fifth. Corban Joseph led off with a walk and one out later moved to second on a single by Almonte. Dan Johnson followed with a single through the right side, it drove home Joseph from second base and extended the lead to three.
Adams helped put the game out of reach for the RailRiders in the sixth. Bobby Wilson led the inning off with a single, and moved to second on a single by Joseph. Adams followed with a triple to right-center field, which plated both Wilson and Joseph for the fourth and fifth runs of the game for SWB.
SWB starter Dellin Betances (2-2) settled down after a slow start in the first three innings, and tossed five hitless innings. He did issue four walks, but struck out three opposing batters.
The Braves ended the no-hit bid in the seventh with a one-out single by Joe Leonard. He moved to second on an error by Joseph, and came around to score on a single by Alden Carrithers. Reliever Sam Demel got Matt Pagnozzi to line to first to end the game, sealing the game one win for the RailRiders.
Chris Bootcheck (4-0) stifled Gwinnett batters in game two, limiting the Braves to just one run on four hits. Despite the solid effort, his International League best earned run average rose to 0.60.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre went out in front early in game two with a run in the second. With one out, Ronnier Mustelier walked, and moved to third on Melky Mesa's double. Luke Murton then followed with a groundout which allowed Mustelier to score from third base.
The Braves evened the score off Bootcheck in the fifth. With one out, Matt Kennelly reached on a bunt single up the third base line. He advanced to second on a groundout by Todd Cunningham, and scored on a single by Carrithers.
The game did not remain tied for long, as Mustelier hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning. His first homer of the season cleared the left field wall, and landed in the Gwinnett bullpen.
Jim Miller worked a scoreless seventh inning for the RailRiders to earn his second save of the season.
