G-Braves Swept in Doubleheader by RailRiders

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - After being rained out Saturday night, the Gwinnett Braves (12-19) were kept cold on Sunday afternoon as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (17-11) won both ends of the doubleheader, 5-1 and 2-1 at Coolray Field. The G-Braves managed just two runs on seven hits all day as their season-long losing streak reached eight games.

G-Braves' starter Tim Corcoran (L, 1-3) was not as sharp as usual in game one as he allowed three earned runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings. He was tagged early as the RailRiders took advantage of consecutive mistakes to get ahead 2-0 in the third inning. David Adams was hit by a pitch with two strikes, and Zoilo Almonte promptly followed with a two-run homer.

The RailRiders scored another run in the fifth against Corcoran as Dan Johnson singled home Corban Joseph for a 3-0 lead. Adams added a two-run triple against left-hander Dusty Hughes in the sixth, making it 5-0.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Dellin Betances (W, 2-1) hurled 5.0 innings of hitless baseball, striking out four in game one. Sam Demel turned in a perfect sixth inning, extending the no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh.

The G-Braves finally broke the no-hitter against Demel with one out in the seventh as Joe Leonard hit a sharp single up the middle. Jose Yepez reached base on an error and Todd Cunningham walked to load the bases with two outs. Alden Carrithers delivered an RBI single to left, scoring Leonard and bringing the tying run to the dish. However, Matt Pagnozzi ended the comeback attempt by lining out to Johnson at first base for the final out.

In the second game, the RailRiders took advantage of a one-out walk to score their first run in the second inning. Ronnier Mustelier drew a walk from starter Roman Colon, and Melky Mesa doubled to left field to put runners on second and third with one out. Luke Murton drove in Mustelier with a groundout to short, making it 1-0.

Colon was otherwise terrific in his spot start, allowing just one run on one hit over 3.0 innings in a no-decision. Still, he'd be out-pitched by RailRiders' starter Chris Bootcheck.

Bootcheck (W, 4-0), the International League's ERA leader entering the game, hurled 6.0 innings with one run allowed on four hits. The lone Gwinnett run against him came in the bottom of the fifth as Matt Kennelly reached on a bunt single with one out, moved to second on a groundout by Cunningham and scored on an RBI single by Carrithers.

The 1-1 game wouldn't last long. Mustelier took a 0-1 offering from reliever Cole McCurry (L, 0-1) over the left-center fence to give the RailRiders a 2-1 lead in the sixth.

Jim Miller (S, 2) sealed it in the seventh, recording his second save of the season with a scoreless inning.

Carrithers drove in both Gwinnett runs on the day, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. Kennelly added a 2-for-3 effort in game two.

For Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Almonte collected a combined three hits and two RBI, both coming on his game one home run.

The Gwinnett Braves will try and end the eight-game losing streak in game one of a four game series with the Pawtucket Red Sox, set for Monday night at 6:05 PM. Right-hander Omar Poveda (2-1, 1.93 ERA) will start for the G-Braves against right-hander Rubby De La Rosa (0-0, 7.11) of the Red Sox.
