Rochester Red Wings News Release

Rochester Red Wings (5-13) @ Syracuse Chiefs (7-10)

NBT Bank Stadium - Syracuse, N.Y. - 6:00 p.m.

RHP Virgil Vasquez (2-1, 4.80) vs. RHP Chris Young (NR)

TODAY'S GAME: The Red Wings open a 4-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. from NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, NY... The Wings are coming off a 3-5 homestand and a 4-game split with the Pawtucket Red Sox after falling 8-2 in the series finale on Monday. Still, the Wings have won 3 of their last 5 games after a season-long 7-game skid... The Chiefs, meanwhile, sit at 7-10 in the IL North (T-4th place; 5.5 GB of BUF) and are just 2-8 in their last 10 games after starting the year 5-2... After the 4-game set the Wings will return home to open a 4-game series against the first-place Bisons at Frontier Field.

ROSTER MOVES: On Tuesday morning INF Mark Sobolewski was transferred from Rochester to New Britain (AA) after hitting .182 (8-for-44) with one home run and 4 RBI in 12 games with the Wings... The 26-year-old, MiLB Rule 5 pick up from Toronto, was just 2-for-21 in his last 6 games... Taking Sobolewski's roster spot is 25-year-old INF Nate Hanson who was promoted from New Britain (AA) after hitting .300 (18-for-60) with a home run and 9 RBI in 15 games. After starting the year 0-for-10, Hanson is hitting .360 (18-for-50) in his last 12 games including a 4-hit game on Sunday in his final game with the Rock Cats... Last season, the University of Minnesota alum, hit .276-7-50 in 101 games in New Britain. In his 6th pro season, this will be Hanson's first taste of Triple-A after being drafted by the Twins in the 28th round of the '08 draft.

VS. CHIEFS: The Red Wings went just 5-11 against the Chiefs in 2012, their worst mark against any division rival last year... The Wings haven't won a season series against Syracuse since 2009 (their 1st year as a Nationals affiliate) when the Wings won 9 of 16 games... Since then, they are just 14-33 against their NYS Thruway rival in the last 3 seasons.

-Last season, the Red Wings swept the opening 2-game series of the year @ SYR

-The last time the Red Wings won a 4-game series at Syracuse was 7/7-7/10/09 (3-1)

RISP WOES: The Wings struggles with runners in scoring position (RISP) continued last night as they went just 1-for-9 in those situations, including going 0-for-3 with the go-ahead run on second base and no out in the 8th inning. On the homestand, the Wings hit just .112 (8-for-71) with RISP and on the season Rochester is batting .148 (22-for-149) with RISP -- last in the IL.

-7 of their 22 hits with RISP (32%) came in one game on 4/7 vs. BUF when the Wings went 7-for-20... Other than 4/7, the Wings most hits with RISP is any game as been 2 (4 times)

STREAK STOPPER : Tonight's Wings starter is RHP Virgil Vasquez who is the only Wings pitcher to win multiple games this season and both wins have come at opportune times... His first win on 4/7 vs BUF (6 ip, 8 h, 4 r) snapped a Red Wings 3-game losing streak to start the season and his win on Thursday night over SWB (5 ip, 6 h, 2 r) snapped a season-high 7-game skid... Despite spending the last 2 seasons pitching for Southern Maryland of the independent Atlantic League, Vasquez is no stranger to the International League. The 30-year-old veteran is 39-24 in 84 career starts in the IL with Toledo (2007-08), Indianapolis (2009), Durham (2010) & Rochester (2013).

-Last year, Vasquez tossed 254.1 innings w/ S. Maryland and Perth (Australia) including 192.2 with S. Maryland... In perspective, CHA's Charlie Shirek led the IL last season with 170.1 IP

TRIPLE-LESS: The Red Wings are now the only team in all of minor league baseball without a triple after Clinton of the Midwest League recorded their first three-bagger of the season last night... The Wings are now just 1 of 3 teams in all of baseball without a triple as the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles are still in search of their first as well.

-Last season, the Wings were T-5th in the IL with 27 triples... Clete Thomas led the Wings w/ 5 triples last year.

PESKY PAW SOX: RHP Anthony Slama would prefer he didn't have to face the Pawtucket Red Sox again this season. After allowing a tied for career high 5 runs last night to the Paw Sox he is now 0-3 with a 46.29 ERA (12 ER/2.1 IP) in 4 games against Pawtucket this season... Against the rest of the IL he is 0-1, 2.25 (ER/4.0 IP) in 4 games.

-The last time Slama surrendered 5 runs in a game was 8/17/09 vs. SYR

EXTRA, EXTRA: Despite being T-3rd in the IL with 15 HR's hit, the Wings are last in extra-base hits with just 31 (16 2B, 0 3B, 15 HR) on the season... It has been 11 G - since 4/11 @ PAW - since the Wings had more than 2 extra base hits in a game... On the year, only 4 times have the Wings produced 3 or more extra base knocks and only once have they had more than 3 in any game (4/7 vs. BUF)
