Louisville Rallies Past Gwinnett, 3-2

LOUISVILLE, KY -The Gwinnett Braves (9-11) were one strike away from a win, but the Louisville Bats (10-9) scored two in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 comeback victory at Louisville Slugger Field on Tuesday night.

Righthander Andy Russell (L, 1-3) suffered the loss, as he gave up both runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Russell got off to a solid start in the ninth, retiring Neftali Soto and Mike Hessman for first two outs of the frame. However, with two outs and no one on, things quickly fell apart. Second baseman Henry Rodriguez singled to center and pinch hitter Emmanuel Burriss followed with another single, putting runners on first and second. The next hitter, catcher Konrad Schmidt worked the count to 3-2 before lifting a bloop single to right field. The single scored Rodriguez to tie the game at two, but Braves' rightfielder Joey Terdoslavich misplayed the ball in right, allowing Burriss to score the game-winner.

The comeback spoiled a fine night on the mound by Braves' starter Tim Corcoran, as he tossed 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run.

The lone run came in the bottom of the second, as Hessman lead off with a double to right center and scored on an RBI single by Rodriguez.

The Braves tied it in the top of the fourth as Terdoslavich slammed a solo homer to right off of Louisville starter Pedro Villarreal.

The Braves moved ahead in the top of the seventh when catcher Matt Pagnozzi hammered a one-out, solo homer to left off of Bats' reliever Nick Christiani. The Braves took that 2-1 lead to the bottom of the ninth.

Russell was credited with his third loss of the season and his second blown save.

Righthander Jose Diaz (W, 1-0) got the win in relief for the Bats. He worked 2.0 innings, allowing one hit, one walk while striking out four. Starter Villarreal worked 6.0 innings, allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out four.

At the plate, Terdoslavich, Pagnozzi and Sean Kazmar all went 2-for-4. Jose Constanza was 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to six games.

Rodriguez had the big night offensively for the Bats. He was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Shortstop Luke Donald and leftfielder Felix Perez each collected two hits.

Game two of the four game series in Louisville is set for Wednesday night. RHP Omar Poveda (1-0, 2.00) will get the start for Gwinnett. The Bats will pitch RHP Daniel Corcino (0-3, 6.94). Tony Schiavone will have the call on WDUN AM 550/FM 102.9 with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
