Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - On a night that was mainly dominated by pitching, it was another case of late inning heroics from the Louisville Bats (10-9) that made the difference in their series-opening 3-2 win over the Gwinnett Braves (9-11).
After eight innings of quality pitching from both clubs, Konrad Schmidt singled to right field with men on first and second on a play that ended up being a walk-off for Louisville. Henry Rodriguez was the first to score, and Emmanuel Burriss was able to come in on a fielding error by Gwinnett right fielder Joey Terdoslavich to win the ballgame for the Bats.
Louisville scored first in the second inning after first baseman Mike Hessman led off the inning with his second double of the season. Rodriguez, who went 3-4 on the night, singled in the following at-bat to score Hessman and give the Bats a 1-0 lead. The single was Rodriguez's fifth RBI of the season.
Braves starter Tim Corcoran turned in an impressive outing on the mound for the Braves, going seven innings and allowing only one run on seven hits and two walks, striking out three.
The Braves answered in the fourth when Terdoslavich ripped a solo home run on a line to right field to even the score at 1-1. Terdoslavich came into the game hitting a red-hot .406 over an eight-game period, and Tuesday's homer was his fourth of the season. He went 2-4 on the game, raising his season batting average to .321.
Villarreal recorded his fourth straight quality start in his six innings of work, allowing one run on six hits and striking out four. At the plate, he went 1-3 and recorded his first career stolen base in the fifth inning.
In the seventh inning, Matt Pagnozzi launched his first home run of the season on a solo shot off of reliever Nick Christiani to give Gwinnett a 2-1 lead.
Schmidt's single and the ensuing error in the ninth marked the third time that the Bats have walked off this season, with all three of those wins coming at home. The other two instances have come off of Felix Perez home runs.
Louisville reliever Jose Diaz (W, 1-0) was awarded his first win as a Bat after recording two shutout innings on one hit and four strikeouts. Braves reliever Andrew Russell (L, 1-3) was credited with his second blown save of the season in the loss.
The Bats will continue their four-game set with Gwinnett tomorrow night, with first pitch at Louisville Slugger Field scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Daniel Corcino (0-3,6.94) is set to start for Louisville against Braves righty Omar Poveda (1-0, 2.00).
